Just that I'm type 1 and only on the weekend it emerged that David Lange is in final stage renal failure as a result of diabetes. I've never thought too much about the occasional high glucose reading, but it's becoming topical innit....

PS. sorry for the thread hijack

That would be APD = Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis?
My Dad was a guinea pig for that, back in 77/78. He was also diabetic, and almost completely blind, and also deaf from the meds they gave him to fight infection from the APD. Luckily, his legs/feet weren't bad enough to be amputated, but everything else was pretty much stuffed before he died. :disapint:
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

I've been type 1 for 11 years or so (maybe more, must check) with nothing much in the way of complications thus far....

It can be a lottery (the complications) but you can do a lot to look after yourself too... It's getting easier as the technology improves but the complications still occur.

I have an interest in Diabetes (obviously) and have just joined the Wellington committee (groan) in an effort to do more.

That's 3 of us here that are type 1 bikers.

We should form a splinter group.

    a name?

    The Injectors?

    Sorry to hear that, Paul.
My father developed diabetes when he was 28, and never managed it particularly well, out of resentment (he was very active and sporty before that) and vanity (he didn't want his work mates to know he was diabetic, I guess.) As a result, he had times when he had wildly fluctuating blood sugar levels, especially on his last overseas trip to France and Germany, when he was very ill), and that contributed markedly to his eyesight deteriorating, and had several bouts of laser surgery to fix broken capilliaries in his eyes.

Yuck. Dad had continual peritonitis with that. He'd go to hospital, get an infection, it'd clear up, he'd come home, he'd get another infection, go back into hospital, etc etc. FWIW, he didn't get infections from when Mum was nursing him. Spent nearly a year in hospital on and off, slowly dying. :spudwhat:

The two that have made me chuckle are the development of blood-sugar sensitive tattoos (so you can get a strip tattooed on and depending on colour you know what your levels are) and a cellphone that you can bleed on and it'll tell you the same thing.

jeeze.. Don't be feeling sorry for me.. I sure as hell don't...

I'm already mentally deficient, ugly as anything and have a major personality defect. Diabetes is the very least of my problems mate... In fact I'll probably live longer with it than without!

I read a few books and chanced on one re the physcology (sp) of the thing and mangaged to get my head around it. (well I think so but..)

Anyway. If anyone wants to PM for info, you know where to find me!

Back (to hijacked) subject though: I've only known for about 18 months - found out when I totalled my GSXR actually, something good came out of writing off my bike, a car and my tibia. And being new to this thing I am not fazed by seeing readings between 8-10 most of the time - should I be?

Damn, that's pretty cool, shame it's not one of my beloved Nokias. Next, bring on the slow release/controlled insulin patch, these needles are so 20th century man!

Fortunately not. Needles and I don't get along well (something that causes medical professionals considerable amusement until the first time they stick one in me...)

You guys may have remembered the RD350 i posted up to get a price on. That was my dad's bike, it will be sad giving it away, anyway he died of diabetes and ive got a high chance of getting it. Blakamin is right, life is far too short, so i might go out and buy me a new bike too, while im still young (17)
    Never give up guys.
