    Not everyone dislikes bikes

There's been a lot of vitriol towards bikes expressed lately (Trademe forums and Herald forums) and it was starting to get rather frustrating .

That was until my ride to work this morning.

I'm riding along the motorway and a bus load of school kids goes past. There wasn't an inch of window that wasn't filled with kids grinning and waving.

    :spudwave: :spudwave: :spudwave:

You could just tell I'd made their day when I waved back to them.

    Seems not everyone hates bikers

Oh yeah.. Especially when I started waving back. I wondering if bus would tip over onto me when the kids from the other side rushed over.

I think that's changing now to be honest. The more bikers there are the more people start to realise that we're not all gang members and boy racers on bikes.

I know my friends and family all take more time to look out for us on the road and think better of bikers since I started riding.

true... i think your family are taking a better look because they are now thinking ahead and putting your face on the bike approaching, and realising the biker is someones loved one.

Heh, its always funny to see the amazement and suprise on cagers faces when a biker pulls up to see if they need a hand. I used to do it in my cage and just continued what I normally do.

And of course, when people get to know you, they get a completely different idea about motorcyclists when you are a reasonably sane, intelligent and thoughtful citizen!

Even funnier when I turn up to other schools and they look askance until the penny drops and I'm a fellow educationalist!

But yes, the waves from kids are kewl and it makes my day when I see their faces light up when we wave back or acknowledge them!

I just like to try and treat other people the way I would like to be treated myself, a bit of courtesy, humor and patience! (Though sometimes it can be most testing! )

Just remember to keep paying it forward!

That's exactly the reason. The more people think of us in those terms the more things will change.

I've ridden more than 60,000kms and have not personally experienced any 'vitriol' or hint that people don't like bikes/bikers.

Some guy tried several times to run me off the road for no apparent reason in his 4WD once, but I think that's the exception rather than the rule. Several cars moved out of my way so I could lane split this morning, one was even a taxi.

The kids likes the bikes alright... Be good sorts and give the a wave and we might present later generations with a more biker friendly environment.

I haven't had any huge aggression coming my way so far - but have had tailgaters who doesn't understand that a yellow L plate on a motorcycle means "Stay back to avoid manslaughter charges!"
It is preferential to refrain from the utilisation of grandiose verbiage in the circumstance that your intellectualisation can be expressed using comparatively simplistic lexicological entities. (...such as the word fuck.)
