First time rush hour filtering.

Back in the UK, I commuted about 40 miles a day each way, and in the good weather I did so on my most beloved of RVFs. But, despite the UK's professed love of biking and sportsbikes, I rarely saw more than a couple of bikes during my commute.

I probably saw a dozen bikes this morning, all slaloming down the Ngauranga gorge at a steady 80kph, through traffic moving at 40kph. I usually (used to) make a decent attempt at filtering, and I caught up with a couple of slower movers on the way down this morning, but I gave up trying too hard when the first of the guys I'd overtaken a few Ks before the top of the gorge overtook me down the inside shoulder.

Sorry if I held any of you guys up...


Still, a pleasant enough ride in (if a tad chilly) with traffic not too heavy, and great to see so many two-wheeled commuters. Might see if I can pop out at lunchtime for a scoot about.

It's always a fun experience in the Gorge. I usually head down just before 7am.Traffic is pretty light, and usually doing 70-80 ks so no lane splitting required.

Going home is a different story though. Funnily enough most of the car wallahs don't seem to mind if you indulge in a little bit of lane splitting. Just watch out for the people carriers, and the odd 4WD.

I rode into work today with a Volvo in front of me, a Volvo behind me, and a Volvo behind me in the inside lane. None of them even tried to hurt me.

I ride down from Newlands every day...today was nice, traffic was lighter than usual with the long weekend looming.

I'm normally heading down the gorge at around 8:10am ish. I'll wave if I see you.

Every morning I wake up listening to the radio go on about how gridlocked it is on Nauranga Gorge etc (not relative to Auckland of course). Thank my lucky stars I dont have to face it, even on a bike, then I have my 10 min walk to work

But I disagree with the first post, living in the UK and cycling/driving to work as I have no bike here and I see many motorcycles on the commute!

Aye, well, that's because they're moving considerably faster than you. You'd see less of them if you were travelling at approximately the same speed.



Maybe it's just down to where I lived, but there were days I'd not see a bike at all, discounting scooters.
