Shite that WAS Quick: A warning to those prone to stoopidity

While not as spectacular as the efforts a search turned up in previous threads, the attched shows what can happen...

Yup, thats right. The old finger between the chain and sprocket trick !!!

Did it last night when I came home from work, I decided I would quickly do the chain while it was warm and I had the bike running (yip, in gear and on the centre stand). Now, normally I would just give it a spray with chain lube in which case the fingers are well clear, but I got sidetracked and suffice to say found myself in a situation of Fingers, Rag, Moving chain...

Anyway, the entire top was ripped off/open, and the bone is fractured but other than some stitches they reckon it will heal itself

So.... Yip, it can/does happen (not that I expect that will stop anyone, it never has me)...

Wasnt going to post up (the ) but probably good as a gentle reminder (I know its lunch-time sorry)

    Shizenhauser!!!!

That looks most painful...but bling sent for the calm it must have taken to take the picture in a steady fashion!

Hope you get better soon and won't have any limitations in the use of your finger!

Owww ow ow ... I guess thats why I pull out the paddock stand and without it running, turn the rear wheel by hand while lubing! Too afraid to have that situation happen! (Not that I have heard of it ... until now!)

Hope ya heal up quick and don't play "pull my finger" until its well sorted!

    What have we learned ???

i never lube my chain with the engine running, and that pic explains why.

    Must hurt like a bitch.

At least you have a good attitude to it.
There was a Murkn guy a few years back on one of the VFR forums I belonged to, and he did the same thing, but lost a fingertip or two. After posting lots of pix of it all over the Interdweeb, he ended up saying, "This sport sucks - I'm outta here!" and giving up biking. :spudwhat:

I usually wipe down my chain after lubing (the chain, not myself!) by spinning the back wheel with one hand and ragging with the other. I have even done the "motor running, spray the chain" thing (can't remember if I did the "wipe the chain thing" too), but when I do so I always regard the rear sprocket the way I regard the blade on my circular saw, or the chain on the chainsaw. And I'm reasonably careful with those (I've cut the power cord on the saw only twice...)
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

If you must wipe the chain, then it is highly recommended that you do it with the engine off and rag-swathed hand on the chain as it comes OFF the sprocket. This really IS sprocket science....
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

what grade of oil should you use?

(Woohoo - I'm off to get a rear stand)
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

I had the same bright idea while prepping my bike for the return to work after our first child was born. In my defence, I hadn't had a lot of kip for the previous three weeks.

In my case, the top was twisted right off, and they had to remove some bone so that there was enough flesh to heal over.

Well I'd say "that was stooopid" but you know that I'd say "don't do it again"... but well - wasted words again.

So, instead ... I'll let the pic speak it's 1,000 words to everyone else...

    Oh... and ... bugger.
