    I think the xj myself.

    Reconsidered telling you what I think is wrong so here goes;

? the choke cable is seized
? the idle needs to be adjusted up
? the carbs need to be balanced
? forks need a heavier weight oil to firm them up a bit

There are a few other little things that I have noticed, but you need to see them to know what I am talking about, and whether they are contributing to my idle/surging/choke issues is something I have no idea about, you would have no problems telling me I am sure.

all your carburetion issues might come down to the choke--Might not too but hey no worries.
Forks--Yup yamahas of that vintage had woefull front springs. I betcha it aint the fork oil.(or at least the fork oil on its own)
Does it dive to the point of CLUNK under braking?
The fueling issues I can sort out and depending on your budget I can Improve the front end or strip the forks out and send em for respringing/reoiling
The brakes probably feel a bit orrible too.
Why doncha come for a ride to my place and Ill get it sorted for ya

    You are a lovely thang!!

Will be in touch shortly. In the meantime here is a link to the ride report that I did after we went out this weekend, it explains a bit more about the handling at the front end

The tyre is stuffed! Big time, I have attached a pic that may be fine enough for you to see the wear pattern, whatever it is being replaced, I need to know if there is a reason for it happening or if it is infact just old and tired....LOL

I tend to agree with you about the choke, it really does not seem to be functioning as it should and will account for a lot of the fuelling issues I am having.

    Thanks FROSTY!

check thew tyre pressure--on one of those bikes with that tyre it should be 32psi --If I started to get head shake I'd check tyre pressures as first port of call
Re the choke-pull da tank off and disconnect the cable--then push the slides across as far as theyll go (youll see what I mean when you look at the carbs

sounds like youve found the problem
Now a temp solution to the idle etc issue.
-right in the middle at the back of the carbs is a 16mm knob--turn it half a turn clockwise --that should speed the idle up a tadd

I've had a few XJ's in my time...they're bombproof. See if XJ600 diversion parts fit as they're quite new and go for bugger all on ebay. Find out your disk sizes and measure the mounting bolts as you might find early FZR (not R6/thundercat calipers unfortunately) 4 potters are a straight fit.
