i think in Aussie when you pay your rego you get 3rd party included in the price, i could be wrong tho, i think its the way to go here, then again we already pay enough in rego but then how else can you make people get insurance?

Picture this - 5.30 daytime traffic on way home stopped and idling on my bike at a red light Dunedin one way system.
Boy racer type car with three guys in right lane beside me - rev rev rev.
Light changes and I take of as normal, quick but smooth - low revs and no drama.
Get up to 50k and there is a screaming exhaust, hisssing/clacking wastegate and the boy racer rips past at about 70k which is stupid as the next light is already orange.
Stop at the red and take off the same again, boy racer rev rev scream hiss/clack gets left behind, as he passes me again as I am at the speed limit they all give me the finger. I realise I have been drag racing and didn't even know it at the time!!! I nearly wet myself laughing at this coz a man nearing 50 riding home from work is a funny boy racer, until I see the look on their faces. They were really mad, I mean you could see real anger, hatred and aggro in their faces!!! I have never done anything to anybody that would get that sort of reaction before and here I did it without even trying. They drove alongside me trying to scare me for the next two lights swearing at me and giving me the old finger, they probably felt I had humiliated them.
My bike is not a flashy sports bike. OK it does have race numbers on it - but that’s coz I race on tracks not the road.
Boy racers do usually make me laugh - all flash, noise and show they are really quite funny - all noise but not enough trousers to go real racing. No coz they don't have the skills or balls for the track but I don't think they are so funny anymore! I was ready to take evasive action coz these guys actually alarmed me.
    you race a DR 650....?
i had one of them once, cool bikes.
say, you didnt enter a hill climb a while ago?

Fully agree with the 3rd party or why don't they put cc restrictions on cars like with bikes?

I own a couple of show cars and have noticed it happens the other way too though, I get bikes pulling up next to me and revving with the odd nodd lol. I always get pissed off for not being on my bike! lmao

I'm sick of paying the earth for all my insurances on high performance vehicles, bloody thanks to the wee 'boy/girl racers' giving us enthusiasts a bad name :S

I rev my motor sometimes because it sounds cool :P

You may have noticed that the other day haha

Anyway, how would 3rd party insurance help other then making it more likely the person they crash into will get a few cents towards the damage to their car. I reckon hit the problem at the source and change the culture that breeds the behaviour we are discussing here.

Fuck.. just added my dodgey spelling of behaviour to my Firefox dictionary on accident.

You aught to see how pissed off they get when your bike is louder at idle than thier cage is when revving.

Yep. My thoughts as well - give them a restricted licence too - max 1200cc 80hp for first two years! It worked for bikes (sort of), so why shouldn't it work for cars too - particularly given the current easy availability of high performance cars for low prices.

To the 250 owners and Badgirl who want 3rd party insurance. As I posted before I paid over a grand for 3rd party f & t in the UK. The NZ market is not big enough for the govt to back a scheme like Oz. I suspect they will just hand over the running of it to private insurers and bikers under 25 yo will end up getting screwed.

As for young people driving/riding anything modified or expensive, forget it. I know riders who were stupid in the past (DIC, careless use etc.) who have to wait till they hit 40 to get their dream bike since it takes years to get their premiums down. Over there it is: no insurance = no ride.

There are already enough laws to deal with boy racers. They just need to be enforced and fines need to be recovered.

Yes I race it a lot. Did the Hill Climb and Quarter mile sprints two weeks ago, did the "Have a go day" at Levels last Saturday. Done quite a few Motard races at the Silverstream Kart track this year and some Gravel sprints and a Mini TT too. Racing again at the Kart track again this weekend and then it down to Ingll for Burt Munroe Teretonga and the Wyndham street race. I also ride it to work everyday - you could say I am getting my moneys worth out of it and it does quite well sometimes too.
Some stuff about it in the DR650 thread on the Adventure Bike Forum.
PS. I am looking forward to the BM weekend coz I am soooo ooolllld I have a real Burt Munroe story from when I raced at Oreti Beach and Teretonga in the late 70's.

Lol yeah I don't blame ya, if my bike sounded like that I'd be doing the same :P

Nah I think the cc restriction would be a better idea. Although... it could work the same way because damned if they could find an insurance company just willing to do 3rd party on alot of the boyracer higher performance cars, you have to pay the earth for full cover which will screw them

i had this boyraced toyota (pic below) corolla for an art-performance I was doing - new to me I got pulled over at random by cops. other boy-racers would pull up along side me on the m-way, hover at 100 till i looked over, then gap it ... i found it wierd at first. i was always going to loose the race in my non-turbo p.u.j.

on the ducati I have had two different holden utes ride my asse on m-ways till i gapped it, with one of them -he was suddenly they on my asse again, i gently weaved the whole southern city-bound, then forget about it and cruised the north-western to te atatu off ramp-WHERE holden shoots out of the fast lane and revs it round the front. a most ugly peice of driving.

i still think "racing" on normal roads is dumb and dumber holden drivers in particular are bafoons (no offence to any biker who owns a holden , that's different)

I get the same shit when out in the F100 (hot rod) - they cruise alongside taking pxt with their phone, giving thumbs-up (or modern equivalent) and then sit along beside me in the next lane for ages (and preventing me from changing lanes at times before mrrrrrrm-pisssh-mrrrrrom-pisssh, they're gone, sometimes doing the swerve in front thing too.

My wife (reading over my shoulder) said you should harden up :-) "sticks and stones"etc. However my experience (in ChCh) of having my lane encroached by a carload of large polynesian males (not that that is relevant i'ms sure) and me tooting in alarm/warning, resulted in them stopping at the next set of lights and aproaching me with baseball bats and tyre iron!
That my friend is was truely anxiety provoking!!
