The only "wave" I remember a farmer (I guess he was a farmer) giving me was some old guy walking down the road with his back towards me (my side of the road) who stuck his arm out with a fist, as if to knock me off my bike. I guess he wanted to indicate he doesn't appreciate people on bikes hooning past.

Well I don't hoon past farmers,I often stop for a chat if they are on a quadbike following a mob.

Farmers wave to me on the back roads. And are often happy to chat. Perhaps the "hooning" is the key?

Those back roads are where the farmers live. Folk here are quick (and rightly so) to condemn excessive speed in built up areas. "What is a child ran out?"

But the farmer's children live beside those roads. They don't appreciate people hooning past their homes any more than folk in cities would.

Not to mention beasts being scared (more than just an annoyance - scare a cow and it won't give milk. That's the farmer's income y'know), dust from the road (an ever present annoyance to Mrs Farmer).

Treat the farming folk with consideration and courtesy, and they'll reciprocate. Those roads are their roads. Their rates pay for them, we're lucky to be allowed to ride them.

Keep the speed sensible , y can still have fun, and every body's happy.

When I went on my Hakarimata Range ride the farmers waved - some on farm bikes, some on quads, some walking, one on a tractor. Got a lovely smile from a Mrs Farmer on a quad towing a trailer as I courteously slowed down and passed carefully.

    Mind you, I do ride a Road-Trail...

    And the XT225 doesn't "hoon".

I'm not levelling shit. I'm merely reporting on my experience of riding over here during the past year. If I'm approaching another motorcyclist I tend to give a cheery wave or a nod. Approx 80% of non cruiser types acknowledge this. Approx 80% of cruiser riders don't. This isn't $hit I'm making up. It's just FUCKING BAD MANNERS and yes, it's beginning to piss me off.

I'm not harping on about your chosen style of machine...hell, I'd quite like one for certain journeys. Shh..I even go for rides with mates who own cruisers

Well there's your answer. Look who's levelling and harping now?

You wanna know why SOME sportsbike riders don't wave? It's 'cause they have probably had experience of feelling like a fucktard when their polite gesture is ignored.

jeez mate, pull your knickers out. theres bigger things to get stressed about. if i wave and dont get a response, well, tough. i just keep on going. whether another rider waves or not doesnt affect how much i enjoy my ride. if they wave, its all good, i wave back. maybe they want to keep both hands on the bars...might be on a new bike and just getting used to things. might be a new road, or they know theres a big bump coming up that they need to have full control for.

im more stressed about the wanker in the car who over took me, with oncoming traffic and nearly knocked me off. i literally didnt know he was there, despite having just checked my mirrors. so now im going to be a bitch and refuse to let any cars behind me overtake unless they move fully into the other lane...no more moving left and riding in the ditch. they can damn well wait till the way is clear.

    Scracha, scracha, scracha,

YOU seem to be missing the point.

The reality is, some groups of riders become insular and polarised, and it doesn't matter what they ride. It's not just the cruiser riders.

I did a 300km ride yesterday afternoon (luverly day in Dunedin.....), and how many sprotbike riders waved back? Zero. Zip. The Big Doughnut.

But did I rush back home to post another whining thread about it?

Starting yet another thread on the same boring topic, when there's already at least two current threads on the wave / no wave / blurdy cruiser riders?

I found Slashwylde's response rather amusing, and if you actually bothered to read and /or search the forum before posting, you would understand the level of exasperation at these boring repetitive threads. At one stage most new threads in the Cruiser forum were Cruiser / Harley bashing threads.

You won't find the crusier riders across in the sprotsbike forums, pouring scorn on their rides.

And that for me is the difference between the two groups. Crusier riders get out and ride, while the sprotsbikers come in here and whine.....

Ride your bike mate. And if you wish, wave to whoever you want to. If some don't wave back, don't stress about it. And don't pidgeon-hole them on the basis of what they ride, because there's two sides to every story.

    Thank you for that!
Stupid thing is when I'm out riding I'm with a bunch of sport bikes and they don't get waved to either! Who cares!
I got more upset when I had to push my bike and four riders went past me and not a one stopped to offer help or see what was wrong!
If all people have got to worry about is whether some sports bike/cruiser/harley/scooter rider waved, then they have a pretty shallow life.
Me, I've got more important stuff to worry about!

Read? I wish. He hadn't been able to read anything since the Zulus took his eyes in the Boer war. He did pretty good though until he lost a leg in the tragic drunken lawnmowing incident of 42. Luckily he retained his sense of humour and was still able to entertain the family at xmas time with his efforts in the annual arse kicking contest.
However, with the power of hindsight I have to admit that in the end he was a bit of prick...never did wave at sprots bike riders.

Very good - He would have approved of the 'tackle manouvre'.

I believe that that was how he lost his other leg. Fell off his stick shift Indian while trying to wave his "tackle". Just to avoid confusion in others, this tackle manouvre probably has very little to do Richie McCraw.
