The best straights in the country

Actually there is a road out past Rutherford road (you'll notice that I don't mention the road so people stay off and I can have my fun) that is 12KM long - measured it with my own speedo (not the undies/togs either) That's a very short drive - or at least it seems it...

Anyway back to my point - hence 10KM doesn't seem so unrealistic - I can't remember the length of my other road but it's pretty long too. Then there is telephone road past puketaha and I can't remember the length on that either but it's about as long also - but too bumpy to have fun on really.

I love the corners as much as I love the straights to be honest, they each have there own appeal, as long as im riding im happy. Just because your 2 fiddy couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding doesn't mean you have to take out your frustrations on a big sprotsbike rider now. This thread is about one aspect of riding, my bike does both, sorry bout yours

I think you missed the point of biking in general. I watched you start off on an SR250 -- yes, not much better than a GN250, an acceptable commuter. Then straight to an 100hp 750, then to an RF900, a large massively powerful sports tourer. I don't know quite how to put it in words, but there's a certain attitude there that tells me you need to spend time on an SRX400 or even Jim2's Kat to learn more about two wheels. I'm hardly an old hat -- I've only been riding a bit less than twice the amount than you have -- but I personally (and rather boastfully) think I've cottoned on to what motorcycling is perhaps about.

0-100kph times, radar scanners and doing runners from the police it ain't.

Pretty much you can easy do a drive to include all of em and if you're up for it include a gravel road or two for added entertainment. I don't do them so often anymore - petrol prices, theives and flatmates stealing radar detectors have seen to that. But when I used to they were great.

Straights are all good. I am straight, I like my whiskky straight and I like people to deal with me straight. However a dead long straight piece of road can be a tad boring, unless there is some corner you can then nail hard under brakes into...and then a whole lot more corners...

You didn't watch shit clown. Ive never owned a 750 before, ridden them before yes. Have been riding on & off since I was a kid (long time), got back into biking at the start of the year. Any other assumptions you'd like to make while were at it? Im by no stretch of the imagination a top rider im first to admit.


ps: wtf are you on about anyway??? (coming from a 19 year kid with a 250 named Natalie lol) I started a simple thread asking people where there fav straights were now you & a one or two others attempt to turn this into a "oh if you like straights you obviously don't know how to ride a bike"

any piece of the northern motorway, notably, across the harbour bridge maxing out at 200 over the crest toward fanshawe wind lifting my front end
then heading downhill to a sweet left hander 5 lanes wide - note the concrete barriers
note my bike maxes out at 200
note I hit 180 9 days outa 10
note I aint got a licence

Haven't read all this thread but if no-one's mentioned it there is/was a 13km straight just out the back of Manfield where certain people who shall remain nameless used to do 'plug chops' and other racer stuff lolps it was a bit bumpy

My assumption about your attitude was based on you suggesting that I would be frustrated with the fact my bike makes 26hp (on a good day ). And a cursory glance at your post history. Well there are a couple of nice straight roads around Canterbury...

To mention two notables:

Old Tram Road near Oxford - Russel Wright and Bob Burns set a couple of land speed records there back in 1955 on the 27th of July. (261 km/h for a sidecar and 298 km/h for a motorcycle).

Chertsey-Kyle Road near Ashburton - Phil Garrett and Glenn Hayward set the new land speed record for a side car at 271 km/h on the 12th of July 2005.

There are many more however, the Canterbrian plains are good for flat straight roads.

wow 50years later and that record has only been neaten by 10kph!!!

North Canterbury, SH1 past the police truck check point heading north, turn left opposite that big winery. over the railway line, slight LH kink and there you are. Nice bit of wide straight road, recently sealed and only grapes and olives being grown so no escaped sheep to deal with. This road is, of course, best enjoyed at 100km/hr. did i mention that is less than 1km from a police truck stop??
