    Race - Just Do It!

DR's are oil cooled, cheap, reliable but not really race bikes, having said that I race mine in everything. Road, Gravel, hill climbs, Motard etc etc.(I have a few pics of it in the Gallery)

True - but there were a lot of 600 and over sports bikes behind my DR at Levels the other day.

Looks at chain - maybe oil it, then checks tyres and fills up with petrol on way to track. Takes off mirrors and numberplate at track.

The extra torque would be welcome.
For a racier one I'd lean toward the lighter bike.
You onto it! Whats your budget? If you can't afford to be a top runner then have a go with anything, yes anything! Just race!!!

First off - I am just a beginner at this but I did my first three Kart track sessions on Bridgestone Trailwings - best thing I could have done. They slide a lot and I learned to go with it quite quickly. I suspect if I had decent tyres to start with I would have freaked a bit more. I didn't even know I was sliding much until I was told how loose I was by someone else. Now I have decentish tyres and when I slide its a bit less controlled.

Pic was from a while back, it's a heap dirtier at the mo.
That article "Back It In" by Matt Pursley you put the link in for was very informative. I found turning into a corner with heaps of front brake the back steps out without needing help from the back brake, engine brakeing is smooth enough to do it. I would would really struggle trying to control the clutch like he says - I feel I am years away from that level of control!
This thread has really got some good action... Would love to learn more if anyone has links to good resources to pick up tips. My pics look a bit tame to those others on here.

Haha, that's awesome! Made me look at the DR in a different light

Does that guy race at Manfeild? Cause then I've seen it. I was wondering why that old air cooled XR was doing so well against the modern bikes

That's what I'm keen on now. Makes sense since they'll be more reliable than the higher strung 450s. Just got to find a way to afford it

That was an ad for the carbon wheels believe it or not.

I think the XR500 was putting out around 70hp?
It was using an Aprilia con-rod.

Wouldn't ya just love to come out of a corner on that thing and burn off a late model MXer that some dude has poured $10k worth of extras in to....

Mate, at least they're pics of you out there doin it!

I've found with my bike while only a 200, it's still got a heap of engine braking and chatters when you chop it down the gears, so gotta use the clutch to control it. I still need alot of practice though to smooth it all out.

Had my first real slide this afternoon, was more than skill though, came through the corner and it was like "wish I'd known it was going to go that far!".
Turned around and checked out the road, theres a skid about 3 metres long!
Will be going a bit easier from here on!

GaZBur we need more people like you, I thinks it's all about the riding and not the bike. You seem to really enjoy all the disciplines you ride in, a lot of racers seem to have lost sight of that.

AirbornAndy from AdvRider is carrying on in Gazz'zzz fine tradition by getting 920miles into the Baja 1000 (1300miles) before having to pull out.
    On a DR650

    noob

Hey guys.....looking at getting into the sport, what size, make and class would you recommend.
Done a little bit of trail riding on an old XT200 years ago, a bit of 250 proddy racing, too fat and too old these days, but mostly road stuff on my duke twins...latest being the Senna.

you advice would be much appreciated

The big question is it for fun or are you serious.

MNZ Rules click the link for details.
Rule Super Motard 34-8 Capacity Classes:

    Super Moto Class
    251cc to 450cc 4 Stroke
    201cc to 300cc 2 Stroke
Maximum wheel size to be 17 inch, front and back. Brake, engine and suspension tuning permitted. This is the main individual event.

    Super Moto Open Class
    455cc to 700cc 4 Stroke
    301cc to 700cc 2 Stroke
Any modification to wheel sizes, brakes, engine and suspension tuning permitted.

    Sportsman Lites
    0 to 250cc 4 Stroke
    0 to 200cc 2 Stroke
Must have standard OEM dirt bike rims, brake calipers and suspension travel.

    Sportsman Open
    251cc to Open 4 Stroke
    201cc to Open 2 Stroke
Must have standard OEM dirt bike rims, brake calipers and suspension travel.

    Sportsman Junior
    0 to 250cc 4 Stroke
    0 to 200cc 2 Stroke

Junior 13 – 16 years must have junior licence. Must have standard OEM dirt bike rims, brake calipers and suspension travel.

If you serious you should look at 450's.
If you want fun and value get a DR650 or similar.

Not really, I wouldn't use so many question and exclamations marks if I was being serious.

I'm a pretty keen racer when I can afford it, I'm sure my kids in the waaay away future will be fine.

    Too right

I would like to be somewhat serious...I enjoy competition....looking around at what is available 7-8 k should get me a bike already set up.

Am I right thinking the 450's is the so called elite class? I have been watching the international classes and that seems to be the way of things.

are there any clubs in my area? I have done a bit of looking but nothing jumps out.
