  1. #16
If it breaks it breaks... I NEVER go anywhere without it... Its that simple...

I also txt my old lady when I get to certain towns etc... Least that way she knows where abouts to "start looking" if there is ever a time when I *don't* make it home...

Beats saying.. "hey I'm off to Auckland".. Thats 4 hours drive away.. I could be anywhere between home and my destination...

    Call me paranoid... *shrug*

I've not made it home before... Twice in fact.. First time I near killed myself.. And she recieved the knock on the door...

I guess its not just for me.. I do it for her, so that she doesn't sit here worrying about me... If I'm not home by a certain time (when she expects me to be) first thing she does is call my cellphone

Crashed a couple of times with my phone in my jeans pocket. Never broke, Wasn't till I rode home from Hamilton in the rain that the phone stopped working so just take it with you (in a plstic bag if it look like rain...) and don't worry about it.

As for it breaking when you fall on it, you're a bit softer than the phone dude. Unless you've got it up against a spot where your bones are close to the surface, don't worry about it.

    Dejavu all over again...

This has all been done before but there's a lotta new people here since.

The usual argument comes down to whether you have it in a pocket where it can cause injury, or have it in the tank bag or similar where you may not be able to reach it in the event you are injured in an accident.

Of course it's all immaterial really, 'cause Murphy will likely arrange it so there's no coverage in that area anyway...

For the record I want it with me, so it has a pocket reserved.

Afterthought: Actually I originally bought the cell phone specifically for solo riding. I have subsequently seen it recommended in one or other of the bike mags.

Lets hope that you will never have to test it though huh!

Phoenix has his under the seat, but I guess that would suck if you had to get it out in an emergency.
I jsut have mine in my jacket. I figure if I crash and dont have it, chances are it would have been fine and I could have called for help.

I crashed hard with my phone in my right jacket pocket. Judging by the rest of my gear I was sure that it was fucked. But I pulled it out, and not even so much as a scratch on it

Always have a phone on me .. and always make sure Grub has his ... the thing is they are built so extremely hardy that they normally are fine .. and if they aren't someone can switch the sim (if vodafone) to get the details anyway ... I expect to hear from the lad if there is a problem .. if I don't hear from him during a trip I get antsy!

Better in a bag. I've written one off in a pocket. I've had three survive in bags.

Sounds like alot of bike accidents man, what are you doing to crash so often? lol
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

I'm the guy you can thank for you not having a crash because I carry shit Karma for about 6-7 people.

Those 4 accidents were only the ones where I was carrying too.

    1. RG250 - Painted two weeks previous. While fairing was away, it got a de-coke and top end rebuild. Truck charged across 2 lanes of the motorway and knocked me over the barrier. I saw him at the last second and nearly pulled off the braking maneuver of the century. The tail light assembly hit my left clip on and threw me off the bike and into the barrier. Broken wrist and cracked rib. The cracked rib was from the cellphone in my breast pocket.

    2. RG400 - Bus leaves trail of diesel up Houghton Bay Rd. I lose the rear end. So do the two bikes behind me. Wife smashes her ankle to bits. Cellphone is under the seat. Cellphone fine. Ring ambulance. Have vivid memory of young lady doing flying W toward me. She's just crashed her Husband's brand new XJ600

    3. RC30 - Drunk old dude pulls out of side street in Picton. No headlights. No streetlights. Again I see him at the last second. I hit his front right wheel and sail over the car. He panics and drives over me breaking my neck and back. Cellphone was in tailpack. Cellphone is fine. I'm unconscious and keep dying in the ambulance so I forget to ring my wife. First memory is the holes in the ceiling tiles at Blenheim hospital 3 days later.

    4. TRX850 - Corner on Rimutakas. Covered in dirt. Truck has hit the cliff beside the road and dragged a small slip down. Avoid slip, road is awash with diesel from ruptured fuel tank. Tank bag with cellphone in it flies off and slides along the road. Cellphone fine. Ring Motorad to come and get the wreckage, ring Police to report diesel spill. Get, "Big Deal" as a response. Ring long suffering wife to pick my sorry arse up.

I'm not telling you about my racetrack accidents as I never carry a phone on the track. They cause Cancer you know.

Yup, in my wallet I have me licence but to get it out you have to remove the card with my name / numbers and wifes name/ numbers on it.

Usually have my phone in my bag if I have one, or in my pocket with my wallet.

My phone took the brunt of the impact in my pants pocket when I came off going at ~40ks. No damage apart from minor scratches to the plastic, too bad the same can't be said for the bike
