Well, we HAD been told at the pub in Kaikohe that there were road works in May, but hey they had to be finished by now, right? WRONG...Norfland takes its time, eh, so Mangakahia does mean a nasty lil km or so of really shitty HUGE CHUNKY drifts of HUGE CHUNKY gravel! I managed to find some kind of line perched precariously on the very left verge and made it without mishap but blah...I am the most antigravel rider in the whole world I reckon and that road was still worth it..choose it over the main highway any chance you get!

You would have passed my home, Parakao. Yep that road is going to be sweet as, when they finnish They stopped working on it over winter. Worried about the run-off. Have they seen what colour the Mangakahia River is that time of year They should be laying the tar down this week.

Excellent news, RiderInBlack!! Can you keep in touch and let us know when the tar is down please? It sure would make a diff to the next ride.

Titoki where the Mangakahia Area Shcool is.
Otaika is finnish now. Just watch out for pea metal. Highly recommended short cut. No cops, good road. I almost alway take this road to AK and South. The only bit I don't like is the intersection with SH 1 (poor vis and manic drivers).
Please guys if you are planing to come this way give my a call. This is my home turf, so I am up to date with the roads around here

Doh, I read the forum backwards this morning...Resident Angel says it was indeed Titoki. The guy we talked to has a sloppy yellow labrador. Good to hear Otaika roadworks are done but Im still glad we didnt risk it. Im such a wussy on gravel.
