Awesome-- always good to meet up with fellow KB'ers.. Me and my (hopefully soon to be found - new!! ) set of wheels are booked 'on the boat' in a couple of months ( Any one know how to use these damn tie downs properly???)

I can highly reccomend it as a place to stay,comfortable bed,good hosts and only a couple of minutes from the ferry

Well I often pass through Picton cos the old man has a holiday house in Nakuta (*sp) so I like to spend as much time there as I can... awesome spot it is.

St arnaud, another nice spot..... and will that be on a new CBR 250 or the nice VFR that you are hiding from a certian guy that is heading back up north in a couple of weeks (he's a bit worried that you wont hand it over..... or if you do it will have neons instead of fairings

ps: if your in the nabourhood dont forget the Nelson St races on the 2nd.

Well if either of you two are riding into Chch then be sure to lean on the horn.... or stop in for a coffee/beer as you pass the 6th house at the end of the motorway in Belfast

ps:HB4, pratice tying the bike down at home with some one spoting the bike for ya.

To be sure I will give you a yell at some stage - as it is, my parents have just moved to about stone (and a half) throw from you - to a retirement village down by Styx Mill bridge.

Yes - I reckon you would be right there and some practice would be good as I want to make doubly sure that it is safe and secure before I nip upstairs

I am hearing all sorts of stories about unhelpful crew and bikes not tied down properly in rough seas... scaremongering perhaps?

Chrissie - ask White Trash about it, I'm sure (being the freindly fella he is) he'll be able to give ya the low down on the ties.

I've heard varying reports on the Ferry guys and their willingness to help.

Only done this trip once ...but i hope to do it again ..soonish (South Island tour that is).
I had mixed experiences with the 'quick Kat' staff - if you can get on early and (i.e - first couple of bikes on first) then have your pick of th tie down straps, then you can spend abit of time making sure you are happy with how it is tied down.

I still favour having the bike on its side stand, front wheel up hard against the inside of the hull if possible. If you have not tied down a bike before - it is a good idea to practice - and if you have the room in your luggage (and the bucks) buy you own tie downs and take them with you.

I use tiedowns alot at work..
I have found the ones that you just streight pull and clamp work their way free sometime. So you would be better off getting the ones that have the handle tightner thinging.
The rachet ones...

The tiedowns on the lynx are good ratchet tiedowns and I use them if crossing on it,on the other ferrys I have been on they're crap,but you're better off taking your own and tieing your own bike down

I always tie my bike down at all four corners and on the centrestand
don't rely on the ferry staff to do it for you as unless they're asked quite often they wont

The straight pull and clamp tiedowns NC30 is talking about are fine if you tie them off so they don't slip

I'm not to far from Dangerous so let me know when you're down and we'll have a party at his house and trash the place
