    Supermotards

Hey, just a quick question. I was checking out the bike manufacturer catalogs and was wondering what exactly a supermotard is? *being a noob of course lol* Is it a adventure/dual purpose..it's not 100% MX so yeah. Are they any around town? I've started up a full license in 3years fund lol so just checkin out options. Anyone own any supermotards?

A supermotard is pretty much a mx bike with road tyres and brakes and road trim, aparently the most fun you can have on the road at legal speeds. Do a bit of research and youll learn a heap more.

Heres some threads mate, but as Oarbreaker said, they were MX bikes originally, now you can get factory motards that you wouldn't dream of chucking dirt tyres on.

Motards generally have smaller wheels (around 17") than their adventure/dual-purpose siblings (often 21"/18"), and bigger front brakes.

If you look at the DRZ 400 the main difference you can see between the SM and dual purpose models is the wheel size. If you put road tyres on a bike with the dual purpose sized wheels, it doesn't really make it a motard IMHO.

Even without the less road-oriented bigger wheels, standard dual purpose bikes are a hell of a lot of fun on the road, especially when the road surface is a bit dodgy (as it often is on small interesting back roads). And being able to ride standing up is very cool

    Riding a Supermotard

A supermotard will give you a sore ass in about half an hour in the saddle (thanks to the MX style seat) they vibrate, they offer no protection from the wind, they (usually) have a small tank (so you have to stop at every gas station) and every body stops and stares..........So go and buy one....it will be the most fun you've ever had with your pants on

You could ride a motard with your pants off, too, and that would be pretty fun, but somebody would start a thread about ATGATT and you'd get red rep.

Update: 7.5 hours in the saddle is my record (stops every hour or so for refueling and eating etc). Next day: felt like I'd been kicked up the arse! Day after: OK again

Lots of differnt types of motard these days too.

From racing motard like the aprilia SXV5.5 and suzuki RMZ400 narrow seat, light weight and sticky tyres, to ducatis hyper motard and Yamaha's xt660x, bit more comfy, bigger motors and more range, to benellis t-rek, ducatis multistrada and yamaha's TDM900 which are big, good tank range and comfy.

Or the one that started road going production motards the TDR250 Yamaha.

As far as buying. Just ride lots and lots of different types. Sportsbike, tourers, motards etc. might be suprised at what you end up liking.
The real mystery is how come that fat bastard Hurley has never lost any weight.
