Mrs Oakie's bike thieves go to court shortly...

Two males (Trevor M aged 22 and Joshua S aged 18) have been charged with theft of Mrs Oakie's Eliminator which was stolen from outside the Palms Mall here in Christchurch on 28 Sept. Because a witness noticed the bike being thrown in a van and took down the rego, the police had something to go on and made the arrests in November.
The 18 year old who has admitted being involved appears in court on 7 December for an initial hearing and the 22 year old who claims not to have been involved (even though the frame of the bike was found in his possession) appears on 11 December for a status hearing. The actual court proceding would not take place until some time between January and March next year. I was going to go to these initial hearings but the detective handling it told me that I could be waiting there all day and it'll probably just be their lawyer who turns up anyway so I'll give it a miss at this stage.
It is suspected that these two guys were acting under instructions of a third party who is suspected of being the guy who sells the stripped parts. More about this in another thread.
Obviously I can't provide their full names here and I will keep them to myself until the legal side is finished with, assuming they are found guilty.

I'll post further developments as they come to hand.

Yep. Sent it in last night. Asked for them to be punished in such a way as to feel as violated as Mrs Oakie did when she found out about the theft.

I totally agree, they should know the feeling of having a treasured part of you taken and stripped. And I can recomend the part they have chopped of and stripped too

make sure it is more than the "slap on the wrists" that is the solution to everything at the moment.....

should make a point of making this a benchmark case to deter all bike thieves

good luck and i hope they get what they deserve!

Where do they sell the stripped parts? I don't want to be buying any hot bike parts and supporting their godammed crime.

I started it then realised that I probably need to speak to the police first to see what I can say or if I should say anything. We're trying to find the van that the bike was stolen in to link that to the guy but I need to be careful because:
    A) the registered owner may not know anything about it
    B) the person now in possession of the van may not know anything about it
and in those circumstances I wouldn't want anyone seeing the van to get all gung-ho and confront the driver
    C) I don't want to risk the guy seeing the details here and start covering his tracks. The police are looking for the van and I'd hate to do anything to stuff it up for them.
Give me a few days to speak to the cops and if it's appropriate for me to put the details up here, I will.

+1 to that sentiment. Fucking lowlife scumbags will get off lightly compared to what KBers would do to them anyway...

I was thinking about wandering along - I work near the court - and taking a couple of portraits for publication

I also suspect a group of bikers sitting in the public gallery glowering would have as much, if not more, deterant effect than the court process

Yeah - someones going to start a really nasty thread about them and call them names.

I fully agree that they are scum and need to be punished - but lets be serious - the KB 'gang' will never do anything about anything against a person.

Good stuff, Tank, and quite true.

It's quite educational to spend time sitting in the public gallery in the District Court - most of the defendants are repeat offenders and recidivists, and don't give a crap. After the first couple of appearances, they're inured to the whole thing and sentences are at most an inconvenience. Last Monday, I heard three charming 'people' discussing Christmas dinners in prison, and one of them (who was facing the likelihood of a vacation in one of Her Majesty's hotels) was hoping it'd be over Christmas, so he'd have a better meal than if he tried to rustle up his own.

I wouldn't want to be a judge - I guess they have a lifetime of exposure to the legal system so they know what's what, but listening to some of the cases, I would've passed the wrong sentence. Like in the case of Mr Nineteen: his story about "now that he has a partner and young baby he's seen how his mates are bad examples and needs to make a complete new start and move to Christchurch" sounded sincere and moving. But the judge didn't buy it, pointing out that (a) he was being charged for two offenses that occurred while he was on bail for a previous offense, and that (b) the 'clerical error' of his not residing at the address he was supposed to be at wasn't reflected by him reporting that to the police on the two occasions he'd been to the station since allegedly changing addresses, and (c) he'd been charged with 22 offenses so far and was only 19, which didn't seem to indicate he had much intention of "going straight".

There are some reallyfuktup people living in OuterRower.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....
