Bike gangs: ever ridden with them?

As I have grown up in the biker scene a "patch" or "badge" or tattoes is nothing but who the group of riders belong to.I have riden with too many to different "clubs" to count and all while riding a japper!Been to a few biker funerals where it's patches or whatever and been part of the ceremonies and gaurd of honour.I have always been treated with respect and respected their individual places .I have never got involved in "business" but maintained a freindship which revolves around bikes and the road.Some people need to stop throwing stones and really look behind the leather and apehangers to see the real family which lies beneath.

If you want to get through traffic in a hurry - tag onto the back of a gang! It's like following Moses through the Red Sea! The traffic just can't wait to get out of the way! I've had the opportunity to do this many times over the years and, as long as you ignore them and sit behind the pack (to them - your rightful place), it's fine.
Only time they've given me a fright was back in '74, when tootling down the AK motorway with the missus on the back, daydreaming away, on the Ducati, when I suddenly (from the noise - I wasn't watching the mirrors), realised I was surrounded by bikes! Hourdes of Triumphs and Nortons (no Harleys in those days) all having a good look at the bike. A round of thumbs up and waves and they surged past - no trouble at all.

And I have to say...some of the most impressive road riding I have ever seen have been by Harley riders.

Yep - followed, or tried to, a Harley rider back from Oakura to NP, one afternoon. Full ape hangers, barn door riding position, the works! Probably also a full S&S motor etc. The FZR750 had never worked so hard in it's life, just to keep him in sight! And he was smooooooooth, with it. Very impressive!

One of the Grim Reapers had a 750GT around that time,and it was probably them you saw as they were the major ''gang'' in Auckland in that era.These groups are a collection of individuals - some were into it for the image of being a ''bikie'',some were into bikes,and others were a bit of each....and some even more complex.And yes,I have,it's pretty special thundering at speed on the open road,in staggered formation seeing bikes far ahead,and behind,Cops stop and watch them go past,kids mouths drop in awe.And they also don't like it when someone breaks down and the whole group has to be hauled in and regroup,and then stand around as the idiot responsible fixes his bike.....

I used to ride the snot out of my Two Stroke Suzkuki T250 Hustler when I was 18. Was some time ago now (about 32 years ago ) when I was coming home on the Southern from work and spotted a whole group of Hells Angels on their hogs and Brit bikes near Manurewa. I gunned my bike and caught up on the Takanini straight and tucked in behind the last few riders.

Not the thing to do apparently. A jap bike pulling up near these fellows. One of them spotted me and and threatened me with a fist and another one pulled a motorcycle chain off from around his shoulders started braking and swinging in menacingly. I slowed down and relaised I was in for it as the whole group had hit the picks and were trying to block the motorway.

Not fancying the idea of having a motorcycle chain necklace I chopped several gears, shot onto the grass and went like hell up the median barried to the sound of over a dozen large non Japanese bikes throttling up after me.

I went straight off the off ramp at Takanini knowing my top end would have me stuffed staying on the motorway and jumped the stop signs and giveway signs scooting through all the back roads I could find.

I did eventually give them the slip but later that night heard through a party grapevine that the Angels were looking for a rider with a black jacket and a patchy red and white helmet. I was using a well scuffed Daytona car racing helmet then so painted it the next mornig and was careful for days

Hells Angels on Harleys in 1975? I doubt it.A couple of years later the Outcasts were on Harleys,they were the first gang to get Harleys.

When a young fella i was heading to my old mans place through the hundalees on a 500/4 and came upon a group of patched bikers,being 0nly 17 i was of a mind to sit behind them at first but after awhile watching them fuck up every corner on a brillant and my then favourite piece of road i thought fuck it and set about going passed them,i arrived at the old mans place and didnt give them another thought.maybe 2 hours later a bloke turns up complete with cut of leather jacket etc and tells the old man that his bike has broken down..bike was a T160 and the old man being somewhat of a bike enthusiast ie shed full of 60s Nortons,Rocket 3 and a Bevel drive duc says no worrys bring it in,the guy gets it all the way down the Hawkswood gravel road via a tow from one of his mates,these guys spy the bikes in the shed and flock to have a look..no worrys..until the old man asks them to not swear when talking as my step-sister was just learning to talk and as he explained to one of them he didnt want her first word to be fuck etc.....ended up quite the event,the old fella ended up explaining to these guys that a 30-06 round (from the 30-06 he was holding) would without doubt remove a leg and who wanted to be first.True story.

There are some gems in here arent there. SPman, beyond and 98tls had the best riding with the gang stories today. Oh and the lost KB'er at the lights. A few of you really got stuck in and told everyone just what they thought of each other(s) and (bikes as well). Dig it in. I posted a strapping lad pic earlier and while on google the true stories and events i came accross that these guys were/are into is fucking sick. Young girls on the block for all the boys for fun, bashings, robberies, as somone out there said........ "business", I mean fuck that. Say what you like the gangs are the root of alot of bad shit in NZ and the PO-lice are wanting to crack down on these mutts, good job.
But yeah, funny ridiing with them....lol.....and running from them...ducking a swinging bike chain! Geeze.
