    Bike theft location?

I notice I get a discount on my insurance due to living in the south island. And there seem to be ALOT of bike stolen posts, mostly in the Auckland area. I'm curious how bad it is round the country....

So if you or someone close to you (Dont count fellow KB'ers to prevent double ups but mum/dad is fine) has had a bike stolen, where from?

I had a bike stolen once... by AA insurance. I had an accident and the bike was written off. By the time I deducted the premiums paid, the excess, the cost of alternitive travel etc from the payout, I effectively received nothing. AA insurance took the bike and sold it at a profit. So theft, but legal theft.

I have never had a bike stolen illegally in either island.

What are the figures that go along with that tale?

It happened in 1976 so I can't recall the exact figures, but as far as I can remember:

The bike was valued at $1999 (new) and was 6 months old; I had had paid premiums on this and previous bikes for 4 years since I last made a claim, and the premiums were around 15% of the value of the bike. I seem to remember paying over $300 per annum in premiums. My excess was $250. Note that preminums today are cheap in comparison.

After the accident AA paid out market value of $1400, after 3 months deciding whether to repair it or not. That 3 months transport cost me around a further $250. So counting the total amount paid in preminums, excess and alternative transport, I paid around $1700 and received back $1400.

Then AA insurance sold the slightly damaged bike by tender. I can't remember how much they got for it, but the bike was repaired and back on the road in no time. It was another case of possibly .being better off if not insured

Never had a bike stolen, once had an attempted theft on my automatic bomb of a car, they tried to crash start it if you please.

I live in Warkworth, about an hour north of Auckland, yes this affects my insurance premiums

    Never had any vehicle stolen,Yet!

Insurance goes up every year too.

Dogs got the last bastard who tried. HeHeHe, serves him right.

But I did sniff out this little beauty made in Christchurch and for $1200 it's mighty tempting to get one installed.

Dogs might not get the next bastard.

    Anyway check it out http://www.snitch.co.nz/

Comments from anyone who has one or has investigated purchasing one would be apprieciated.

Here is a report on the Snitch fitted to my Harley.

BTW, it was fitted by Snitch themselves, their office is in Henderson, Auckland.

Snitch sounds like a bloody good idea to me.
Track the Bike, Find the Bike, Recover the Bike.
    Simple enough.
Probally 1000 different ways to approach this and being resourceful Kiwi's I'm sure some clever tecniques could be employed.
Although storming a gang headquarters would take some serious balls from several individuals and you would have to really really want the bike back.
I'd leave it up to the cops and the insurance company.
Remember also the other edge to this sword.
Obviously it will also report (most likely to the other half) where you been and how long you been there, so becareful if your doing shit you dont want others to find out.

Heheheh - Perhaps upgrading to a Harley might improve your memory

When I (or my partner!) finally get a bike worth it I definitely think that'll be the next think on the Christmas list, especially after Bruiser's topic. Ahhh, the spying I could get up to!

Auckland is always gonna feature highly in the stats regarding a poll in this regard - hell over 1/3 of the population is there, so it stands to reason that more thefts will occur there. However it also means that over 1/3 of the scumbags of the country (statistically speaking are there too.....

    who knows.
Insurance companies will manipulate the "stats" to justify higher premiums.... so will do what is best for their bottom line.....

We have all our insurance with a certain company (could well be the one you mentioned and they wouldn't insure my bike at all because I didn't have a full licence at the time. Ended up going through Dave Golightly in CHCH and was very pleased with the service. Have since insured both bikes through him and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than going back through Asses Anonymous.
