I got my NSR250 half done on friday, just needs a brake cert and the engine number pointing out now and swap the pipes back to the standard ones. They wanted the shipping documents so it could be shown it was checked by MAF. After all the hassle of running around they used the chassis number and found it anyway

The way I read it they only need the dereg/export cert paper http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/publications...-japan.html#lc

I'm not sure about this bit and if it means bikes before 02 don't need a brake cert.
If your vehicle was manufactured on or after 1 October 2002 there will be standards it has to meet – particularly the brake standard – start at the standards flowchart.
One place I tried told me I needed all sorts of other documents. When I queried it he couldn't find it in his foot thick compliance manual

If you don't mind, what has been the all-up cost of landing/complying?

It failed first time, needed some new fork seals was the main thing. I've fixed that now though.
