I've been riding for 5 years. 4 of them on tarmac, 3 on the road. My first race bike, a KX80 motard, I had only been riding for a year but it took me only a few race meets to catch up to the other dude that had been riding since he was 2 (and it's not like he sucked, he was a pace setter on the MX track). First sportsbike race I entered I went to the front and set fastest lap for the day (then I crashed, but that's another story...). I've been able to keep up with quick guys up the rimutakas and piecock hill despite all my bikes having had the shittiest possible suspension (hell, my VFR doesn't have an oil left in it's shock). So I'm fairly quick when I choose to be.

    Never got my knee down.

    BwhahahahahwwHhaha,

Fuck I can't even type straight after that, bling sent!

You guys that drap your knees on the road have got to learn!
What are you really trying to achieve? Do you think someone will be standing roadside thinking fuck thats cool that guys got his knee down, what a legend!

    Ummmm, I don't think so.

Leaning the bike over further thab you have too on the road is unecessary at best and downright dangerous at worst. Skidmark does make a good point but I think that relates to your body position more than actually having your knee on the deck. You can have your weight tranferred to the inside of the bike and carry the same corner speed at less lean angle and more speed leaning over, IMHO hanging off far enough to drag your knee just leaves you vulnerable if things don't go too well after you've tipped in (cahnge in surface, diesel spill, sheep shit etc) as you will end up with your weight too far to the inside of the bike which in turn makes it harder to get back upright. Don't need to go too far with that premise to see what can happen.

Soi Jinx3d my advice is to save it for the track, you know exactly where the line goes, you know theres no sheepshit on the surface or some fuckwit coming around the corner in your lane and ther might just be someone standing at the side of the track saying "look at that guy he's got his knee down" and then that person might take a really cool photo that you can show all your mates!

    Rant over as you were!

    , I guess I have to find a ...or a race track.
its like losing your virginity (if indeed you have...) once you've done it, you wonder what the fuss was about, and you resolve to improve your technique through practice when the opportunity arises.

(I have to say I am quite proud of my analogy)

But take your own advice: TAKE IT TO THE TRACK: thats where you will find you DO have to hang off because you're out of clearance, clarence, and where your knee on the groiund is just another useful sensor of how your bike is going, and what its doing.

To go hard enough to get knee down on the road, it seems to me, is to not leave yourself enough margin for the "shit happens" factor: which can pretty easily turn fatal.

but in saying this when hanging off you have alot more control over the bike, and can take turns alot tighter.

only once you can get knee down will you understand,

i can gaurantee your can have anybike you desire and put me on a zxr250. and i will keep up because i can take turns at higher speed due to hanging off (not a challenge just saying as an example) hang off the bike it will help ur riding phenominally.

i knocked off 8 seconds a lap round taupo because i started hanging off. and getting knee down.
Crikey! Lets never go riding together. Its "phenomenally" by the way.

Now, stop, I know, half of you are saying "I've been saying that all along!!" and the other half are saying "you fucking queer cant-get-the-knee-down cunt".

Today, I did the coro-loop, (and I wasnt riding recklessly and I definately want speeding... ;-P but fuck me, I had my boots scraping, I had the tyres sliding as the bike came off bumps through corners - theres no chicken strips left even on the front tyre. The back tyre looks like its been boiled in acid.

    Still no knee down.

The only way I can think to get it down would be to hang off so far that I'm practically a passenger.

I'f I go any faster, well, fuck know what happens if I go any faster, I guess I have to find a racktrack smooth road...or a race track.

In conclusion, you guys getting the knee down on teh road are either monkeys climbing off the bike or drift gods riding like theres no tommorow.

    *sigh*
Dude dont stress about getting ya knee down, it ill come in time, also dont bother trying to hard on the road, you will come unstuck very quickly , come to the track with the boys and do it there..

I find hanging off in a big way is not good. If your really leaning right over your knee usually touches down when you just stick it out a bit with your arse still nearly centred on the seat. If you hang off too far your knee stops you leaning over anymore. I don't think my knee has ever touched down on the road and even on the track my peg usually touches before my knee. Nothing funnier then watching tall lanky sportbike riders hanging way off the side and dragging their knees even though they are hardly leaned over and then thinking their awesome.

A lot of people ride bikes for their own enjoyment, you should try it... much more fun than worrying about what other people think

Only if you think so, what other people think isn't really important when it's your own skin and bones you're looking after.

Try hanging off, maybe it'll stop things decking out so soon?
