So new learner's licence, new bike, new gear. And perhaps it's just me and I'm a bit odd, but since getting all of the above I've been waiting for the last 3 weeks for some free time and bad weather to coincide so I could deliberately go out riding in the rain to see how well my gear keeps me dry!

Finally got a chance last night after work - I actually spent all day at the office praying that the rain will last until early evening! I'm pleased to report that things seemed to work pretty well, despite some reasonably significant showers. Only got 45 minutes in before I had to go back to work - again (that's another thread) - but overall I was fairly happy with the way the bike and the gear coped with the conditions.

What would be the point on buying this expensive gear if you didn't trial it intensively? Besides, you've only got so much time to return it if you're satisfied (well, that's my excuse anyway, and I'll stick with it...)

Heh. The funny thing is after several days of mentioning this to my g/f, that was exactly her suggestion. Or sitting on the bike in the back lawn while she attacks me with the hose. I kept trying to tell her it wasn't really in the spirit of the thing.

I did it a few years ago... practice ride for a RNGC took me from Wellington, through Stratford to New Plymouth then over to Taupo and back to Wellington.

I bought some new socks and plastic bags in Hawera.
It stopped raining the second time I went through Bulls.

When I got home my flatmate gave me about a 1/2 bottle of vodka before I warmed up. I think I was about as close to hypothermia as you can get. Oh, and EVERY item of my clothing was dripping.

A couple of weeks later i did the Rusty Nuts Grand Challenge (1000 miles / 1600kms) for the first time. It was dry and a sunday afternoon jaunt compared to the drenching I had on the practice run. As luck would have it we rode a few of the same roads on the big run too

Yep i did the same when i got my new codura, had to see how good it was before getting caught in a rainstorm realising it didnt (work that is) but to my enlightenment they were great just remember to zip your pockets all the way up especially if you have your cellphone in there dang!!

I remember getting caught in a completely torrential downpour all the way home from Paeroa to Manurewa wearing just a Kathmandu rain proof jacket and over pants with my doc martins (before I could afford decent weather proof bike gear). My boots leaked like crazy and my feet were like iceblocks by the time I got home; my clothes were completely dry but I was freezing, there was no bodyheat retention at all. Once I got my RJays I couldn't wait to go out in the rain to test them out. Got a real good testing a few weeks ago - rode through a huge thunder and lightning show (complete with.....heavy hail) in Tirau and arrived at my destination totally dry and toasy warm top to toe. Mmmmm mmmmmm. When people tell you to get decent gear, it pays to listen

If its looking clouded over and I wear my wet weather gear instead of my leathers, then I often hope it'll rain so I can justify wearing them
