Bike hire, Auckland/Wellington/North Island?

i'm spending a week on my own in the north island before flying back to the uk from auckland,

i'll be leaving my girlfriends in the south island, probably nelson.

wanted to hire a bike to see as much of the north island as i can.

given that i only have a week, and limited budget whats the best way to go about it?
