    Mangakahia Rd Update

Mangakahia Rd between Fazers Rd and Jack Rd in the twisties (between Titoki & Parakao) North End: Still has melted tar and a bit of pea-metal still on it, butat least it is signed now (amazing what can happen when you ask nice while in your leathers) (Last sited 09/12/05).

Mangakahia Rd just below Parakao hill on the South side: Verges filled with course metal and course metal from the little bridge at the bottom of the hill to the corner on top of Parakao Hill (Last sited 09/12/05).

Mangakahia Rd Frazer's Flat Courseway (the raised piece of road between Titoki and Parakao as the road goes over the flood plains): Signs are out and the road marked, but they have not started here yet. Expect roadwork here next week (Last sited 09/12/05).

There has bee patch repairs done between Titoki and Maungatapere on Mangakahia road, so expect to find patches of loose metal just when you lease expect it on this whole section. Most of them are sign posted (Last sited 09/12/05).

    sh22

I've often seen mention of SH22 in posts on KB but hadn't taken a lot of notice 'cause it isn't in my back yard.

Usually my trips to the Auckland area involve a degree of time pressure, this year though, with Christmas Eve on a Saturday I've got all day.

Never having been to Raglan I thought it might be nice to have lunch there. Then looking at the map I notice SH22. Hmmm Looks like a plan.

Is the road sealed all the way? If not what state is the metal likely to be in?

I rode it yesterday. It is sealed all the way. There are some minor roadworks in a couple of spots but well sign-posted and nothing to worry about.

The lower part of SH22,coming north that's from Te Uku to Waingaro has a couple of small gravel sections - the first one you come across will be easy, but they are reconstructing the next bit for sealing and it's a bit rugged, but no worse than a lot of road works.Do it,you'll enjoy yourself.

    Napier/Taupo

Rode Taupo/Napier/Taupo yesterday and while the road was good in a few places, in many areas it was a disgrace (considering how much of our money has been spent on it in recent times). The day was not particularly hot and mostly with heavy cloud cover yet there were numerous sections of wet tar. Worst section is from the Tarawera Tavern for about ten K's towards Taupo. This section was almost liquid. The bridge before the first passing lane past the pub had virtually no chip left on it at all; even the cages were sliding around. I had the back step out a time or two before this section despite riding quite slowly. No grit had been laid when I came through at about 3:30pm. Not sure if anything has been done since.
If it should rain through here this nice new shiny surface should prove interesting on a bike. Take care.

Anyone contemplating riding the Khikihi/Wharepapa South/Whakamaru route there is about 1km of new seal (done wednesday) on one of the straights and into one of the fast corners about 6km south of Bryce's Cafe (don't forget to stop for coffee). Was signed, assume it still is.
Also there is about 2km, with more to come, of major roadworks just north of Whakamaru. As they are ripping the road up this was a bit lumpy on wednesday but should be much smoother by now.

    wanganui to palmerston north

valid as of today, lol. pretty sure the places are correct, but some may be a tad off.

patch of resealing...had lights set up for two little sections all of a meter long. think was before bulls [headed from wangas] was sign posted 30k. lights were gone homeward bound [6ish, might be back tomorrow though]

major resealing [unposted] in bulls....fairly well packed and cleared now, but had a few stones flicking up.

another patch of resealing by newbury i think it is...or awahuri? signposted 30k. quite a long patch....fairly well packed as well. got a 30k limit for ages, but safe to go 100k as you come off the reseal.

work beginning on what appears to be a short passing lane just outside of palmerston...cleared part of the grass verge, on the side as your heading into town.

SH1 Between Cheviot and Amberley. There is a unmarked patch of gravel that is 150m long you should be careful of. There are also a hell of alot of road works between Kiakoura and Christchurch, be aware of delays.
