If you're using the correct size good quality sockets, such as Snap On or Stahlwille, then I doubt that they would be the cause of the stripped caps.

Powerbuilt or similar Repco/Supercheap brand is NOT good quality....have a look at the Powerbuilt V8 supercar team. What tools do they use? Not Powerbuilt that's for sure!

it took quit a bit of force to burr the heads of the caps so i cant fault the tools

didnt loosen the clamps if i did that the forks would spin can see how possibly the clamp may squash the fork tube onto the cap but the forks are around two inches proud of the clamps so wouldnt have thought it would be an issue

Loosening the top tripple clamp in most cases makes a HUGE difference. Often the torque setting on the caps is around 20ft-lb and the tripple clamp ensures the cap stays put.
At that sort of torque you can damn near hold the tube with your hand to undo the cap.
That said, as everyone knows, torque wrenches are for poofters and any torque is close enough.

No, just back off the top triple clamp and leave the bottom one done up to stop them spinning. It does make a difference, trust me

The Stranger is quite right, if the previous nutter who did the forks did them up to the correct torque, it's quite possible to hold the forks with your hand on the floor (forks off the bike) and use a spanner to undo the top nuts. It's all in the top clamp, which worries me somewhat when you have the front end lowered through the clamps (although you'd notice it pretty quickly if they started to come undone).

Thought about filing some flats onto the top nuts and using a smaller open spanner?

Come on Mark, they need to justify paying 10X the price some how.
In all honesty, if you are earning a living off of a tool, you are better off with the best, otherwise I got to agree with Mark.

Agh what did a just say!!!

This primarily happened because you didnt first loosen the top triple clamp pinch bolts. In the trade if we did this the customer would demand new caps.

if the top of the fork has a lot of protrusion above the triple clamp then there will be no squeezing tight force.
