So if you guys are leaving from the BK at 6.30, then It would be 7.30 by the time you got to Amberly.mmm

Bingo! This illustrates my point exactly. By not being flexible on occasion with the start place, you start to limit the destinations you can reasonably travel to and back from in an evening in directions which don't include the Port Hills (think speed required to get there and time of return home).
Remember that that the whole ethos of the ride is an evening cruise which is learner friendly so it's not a good thing IMHO to have to either hurry to get somewhere or rule out a good destination simply because it takes half an hour of riding time to clear the city from Moorehouse when travelling north.

Your point is very valid, but so is Transalpers. We have quite a few who show up by word of mouth and many others who don't check this thread because they already know where to go and when. We don't want to screw that up

OK. That's cool. As long as the option is recognised I'm happy with that.
Don't forget though ... 'flexibility is your friend' (but now that I think of it that could just as easily be ... 'Consistency is your friend' too.) Happy now? You've got me arguing with myself!

Speaking of rides north, Mrs Oakie are planning a sedate cruise to Kaikoura and back on Saturday so if anyone sees a couple of black Hondas wandering along at speeds that won't upset the constabulary, that'll be us.

Your point is valid but here is a little thought to add to that if it takes 30 plus minutes to get out of the city and at that time of the day you are getting heavy traffic heading north as all the folks who live in Kaiapoi etc head home, heading north would be great if you live out that side if you coming from the southern side of the city it could be difficult to get to meeting point by 6:30.

Your suggestion of having another night to go north was great, what would be nice is if occasionally we could not plan a ride through the gorges or north on either a public holiday or weekend (I know not everyone has weekends I certainly don't)

I think this is the main thing now the ride has taken on a life of its own with folks turning up thanks to word of mouth.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.
