Stopped at Papakura Autobahn and got a few looks down the nose from other bikers when filling up, so feeling suitably small decided not to approach any of the groups hanging around. I'm pretty shy anyway around new people, so this may have just been my perception. Went off on my way and had 2 people wave to me on the whole ride. I lost count of how many refused to acknowledge my wave as we passed - and only one rider was on a BMW! So to all of those out there on sports bikes, don't be rude. I may be on a 250 now, but that's all going to change soon. The one thing I've always loved about riding is the general camaraderie, so I was a bit put out at the lack of it out there today.
For all those non-wavers, this is for you:

Hi RR, did not see you at AB yesterday, I don,t think any of us would have been looking down our noses at you, many riders in our groups ride 250s, You would have be made to feel welcome had you came over to our group, we were up way from the gas station , just about opps Mc Donalds.

About the waving thing, despite what our resident grouch from Carr rd thinks, most of us do wave at all bikes, the only exception is if the conditions at the time don,t warrant it. I wave when I comute on the southen M/way not many wave back, but , hey WGAF. Don,t be put off, come and say gidday next time...........have sent you a pm.

Hey Riff Raff, fair go mate, most people wouldn't even know what size bike your on.Folks just go about their business and most of the time arn't thinking about getting a wave anyway, their just doing their thing.
If you were to have a yarn with most of these people you think are snobbing you,you would find that 95% are good people that have no problem with what you ride. This topic comes up a lot an the fact is, most if not all of these people will give you a hand if you really need it.
Don't sweat the small stuff man, life's to short as it is.

Thanks everyone for your replies. This thread was started off in the great state of piseddoffifness, which means rationality probably didn't come into it. I guess I just couldn't believe how many had trouble either waving or nodding on the straight bits with plenty of time to acknowledge my friendly greeting. But in reality it's not a biggie. At least we were all out there enjoying a bloody gorgeous day for riding. And they were probably in a tranceful state of blissfulness, singing 'The hills are alive with the sound of music' or something!!

Well I tried to wave as much as I could yesterday on my way back from Auckers, but I was a bit distracted by that shocking speedo needle rising rather fast

    Yep, was a good ride

I even wave at scooters -- but most scooter riders don't get it!

Sportsbike riders don't wave because their luminous squid suits are too tight and their wrists have locked in place on their ludicrously-low clip-ons.

Harley riders... Have you ridden one? The thing's alive! Let go for second and it will throw you.

Goldwing riders can't always, in the heat of the moment, find the "auto wave back" button.

If your hands are full, there's always the chin-down nod...

Well, even though this goes against the stereotypes I wave to every 2 wheeler on the open road. Sometimes if I am mid corner etc I can't wave but try to acknowledge the rider. In town I sometimes do, depending on the traffic etc. Used to do it to scooter riders aswell, but not anymore. Agree with hitcher, don't think they know what its about.

Do you wave at cars towing a trailer with bikes or a ute with bikes on the back. That's what I was doing today and no one waved to me,even when I stopped at the lights next to a sports bike and wound my window down for a look at his bike.I always wave at the bikes being towed, they are riders too.

Ok,I know you do Chris - and you were the only one who did that day too.

Probably were geriatric... aren't all BMW owners geriatric at heart (bypass)

I wave to cars towin bikes... dont get many back tho... scooters just arent worth it anymore...as i said before, they might fall off if they wave or are they just young boy-racers that cant afford it and need a scooter to get to their mates?.... love their safety gear too...helmet and a t-shirt!

Why do they skimp on their gear? Do they think they aren't going fast enough to get hurt?

Actually Jazbug and I (we both ride 250's) have a funny story from when we were riding back from Tokaanu. Her & I were (just a little) behind the others that we rode with and we found that there were a few riders that wouldn't wave to us. After about the 3rd group we were doing hand signals to each other to indicate our displeasure at being snobbed. Jazbug would do and myself , well we rode past 2 sports bike riders going the other way and no wave or nod. I immediately proceed to flick the bird not having noticed the following them - he didn't turned around, I'm not sure that he even noticed me. We both pissed ourselves laughing when we stopped.

I'm kinda over the whole they do & they don't wave. I wave & don't care if others do or don't, although it definitely gives me a buzz when they do.
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

When I first got into biking (which was only like a year and a half ago) we were in the car towing our KX & CRF on the trailer, and when bikers went by they would wave at us, and I thought 'what the hells going on?'
