Some members won't want their personal details listed publicly, even if it is only their first names.

The buddy system takes care of that - people who want you to know who they are will add you to their buddy list.

My name is Laura, why is it a big deal letting people know your name? First name is surely fine. But I agree with Toaster in it being only in the buddy list and choosing who knows all ya details

EJ = An Asian abbreviated name. It used to be a name that many kiwis can't be bothered pronouncing it right, so now I won't be bothered expanding the abbreviation lol
