    TL1000s problem

Went for a quick ride today and everything was normal.Coming home the temperture was lower than normal(71c) when it runs about 84c.The bike wouldn't idle properly and at low revs she was missing and farting about.A decent fistful she would be sweet but part throttle a pig. Motor would die coasting into corners and with a big v twin thats a little scary.I'm thinking of changing plugs.Anyone got any better ideas?

my tl1000s ran like that till it hit 80c + always fart and spit and act like a prick till it got to temp...I think the way the motor is acting may just be a synmptom...the problem is its just not getting up to operating temp...maybe thermostat is buggered? I say riding it tomorrow?? or ring suzi dealer tomorrow?

Yeah ,I think your on to it.I give it a good thrash to get above 80 and she's right but runs like a pig below that temp.Funny thing is I cranked her up after getting her home and she sounds like normal.Even after some motorway running, take it into town instead of the temp climbing its dropping.Thermostat?

I'd be pulling the thermostat and checking/replacing it before it siezes shut instead of open...

Thanks guys.I'll consult the manual.Caning the hell out of it to get the correct opperating temp is not gonna do my license any good at all.As a quick by note I thought they had slipper clutches? Is a quick chirp from the rear tyre normal?

slipper clutches are not 100% slipping...and with the compression breaking of a large vtwin they are working pretty hard...I used to have my one flexing its swingarm under engine and braking into corners...so I was told bu those behind me...all I felt was a wooble!!...matching the revs on down shifts is the proper technique on any bike really..and a excellent one to master.

    Mitchillin,

I had a TL1000Sv from '97. NZ new (2nd container load of ten in the country). Rode it all over NZ and had it for over 6 years. Bitchin bike. Grouse power. Good cams. They are the nicest vintage man. The models got slightly dumbed down in subsequent years.
It had several factory recalls tho; new ecu (x2), new tank, steering dampner and a different thermostat.
They ran slightly cold (like what you describe) and some of us had RGV250 thermostats fitted (bout '95-'97 model from memory).
But i suspect on yours the themostat is just clapped. Best get a new one. Suzuki NZ will probably hook you up with a later model TL one.

    Good luck

    Thumbs up

My TL was a 97 and one mod that was done to it was moving the position of the coolant temp. sensor. Original placement is in the radiator but that would read to cool for the ecu unless you were either riding very slow (no fun) or giving it shit. A small alloy boss was made and tapped to the same thread as the sensor. the boss was fitted into the top of the thermostat housing (alloy welded). Huge difference on warm up (much smoother) and no stalling on warm up at intersections. Might be worth a try.

I had the same problem with the VTR thou, if you don't get her up to temp, she would do all that shit, it dump me once.
Raining, cold, I'm in a hurry, didn't bother to warm her up, str8 out me garage up the road, get to the top of my street intersection, turn start too accelerate away pull the clutch in to hook another gear the engine stalls road wet next thing I know I'm fish tailing then on my ass on the road, going f**k f**K f**K in my head.
The same thing applies with the Buell if not more so, if shes not up to temp she displays the same symptoms.

    maybe a V twin thing
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

Could always fit a GSXR one as Les has done.

Yeah, if your thermostat is holding open, it'll do that.

As an aside, the SVs don't suffer from running funny when they're cold... they just run like a Corolla... turn the key and it runs without any hiccups straight off the bat... nice when you can actually see a tangible benefit to the newer injection systems.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.I don't know why I didn't suspect the thermostat first. It seems so logical now.Took the bike out today and she's back to normal.I'll change the thermostat as soon as I can.
