Mate, now that is pretty stupid. Imagine what your eye would look like if it caught a bumblebee at 100 kph. A small hint: Not pretty at all! (and no, glasses are not much of a help in that situation...)
But glad to hear you kept the situation "somewhat" under control and managed to get it sorted out without a spill.
Mate I usually ride visor up, unless its raining hard.
Awalys wear my glasses too.
Check out my avatar, got the big screen up front which takes care of most things, wind insects etc. The blowflies and moths splat the best on that baby. bees tend to bounce right off.

But yeah I'd imagine a bumble bee in the eyeball @ 100kph would get your attention pretty damn quick.

Had a sandfly fly down my throat one time too.... nearly lost my lunch inside the hemet. That was when I used to ride naked on the GSX.

ive had that... cept the damn thing somehow flew UNDERNEATH the chin guard. the one day i wear a full face and that happens. pulled over and was trying to work out how to remove lid without getting stung. eventually clicked to open the visor.

have been stung a few times while riding. worst, however, was the white butterfly that hit the bridge of my sunglasses at about 110k. left yellow guck all over both lenses.

True.

But after one gets up your sleeve and stings ya don't know if it IS a bee - or a wasp.

So ya pound your arm in the general area with your other hand and hope to kill the sucker before you get stung again.

I've had several bees or wasps enter the helmet; never been stung though.

On the subject of things flying into your helmet - my wife and I were just arriving at Greenlane hospital to visit my Grandfather when had a problem with something in her eye. Tried to get it out but couldn't see anything. Went to see a nurse that dug around to no avail. It took a doctor with the right torture implement to find the sunflower seed (the size of a small bee) that was stuck right round the back by the optic nerve!

ooooo baaad. I once had a grain of sand fly into my eye while cycling a couple of years back. It was stuck so deep it couldn't be washed out so the optalmologist (optometric surgeon) had to scrape it and now I have a scarr on my yey. Lucky it is out of my field of vision and does not affect but man eyes are such a delecate thing. Never rub an eye if something goes in, you can do twice as much damage (I was told by the surgeon)... so yea ...nasty

Bird strike

Has anyone here taken a bird to the body before?

I had a weird experience near Hunua, was driving my cage, window down, wearing t-shirt. Next thing a komakazi bird flew threw the window and smacked me on the shoulder.

It was kinda freaky as it took a moment to process what had happened and there was a dying bird sitting in my lap. Poor bugger!

A friend of mine copped a bumblebee in the eye..riding just on dusk..
3 months later they were still picking bits of it out of his eye.
Nearly lost his eye.
More on bitty things....a mate of mine was walking through the the bush in asia..and a female scorpion landed on his shoulder..it was carring babies.got bitin 5 times.even the babies bite.or sting, lucky it was a brown..not deadly.
copped a bite in the mouth..and one down the trousers.
they gave him a bottle of whiskey.
recons the pain was unbearable.

not a bug story but a trip out to maraeiti the other day a was following a group of cars, I had my distance, aprox 2 seconds. the tail ender of the car group hit a patch that had loose seal on it and flicked a stone up. I watched it arc up and come towards me , I guess watching it i lined my self up beutifully with it and in throught the open visor and smack bang into my glasses. Visor went down after that and stayed down.

Scary what if's went through my head.

A bird story!

Driving my parents Square shaped honda accord to work one day I got hit with sin strike as I crested a hill A loud thunk at the same time and my spidey senses were tingling ... I had hit someting. Looked in the rear view, no bodies no aftermath, so I carried on.

Wasn't till i Got home later that day when I went to clean the car to say thanks for the loan (It's something I do) that I saw a large birds body and legs sticking out of the front grill. Wedged good and proper, blood trail down the bumper and all.

What have we learnt from this? More often then not it pays to keep the visor down at high speed, and, Lend me your dirty car and it will come back so fresh and so clean clean.
