[QUOTE=Slingshot]This is the choice I was faced with, I'm going to Napier in a couple of weeks for 5 days.

    I could either:

    1. Take the car up and have ample space for luggage

    or

    2. Fit a pack rack to the bike so I can carry enough gear for the length of the holiday.

    QUOTE]

Or ..... orr you could courrier you clothes to Napier and ride the bike :naked' with no gear stashed on it?

... and its not that long ago we were reading a thread about how paint was worn off a bike by throwovers. Give me a packrack any day and protect the paint. Buy the Ventura type and you can take the rack off when you aren't using it and replace it with a grabrail if you want it to look better.

Me, well the VFR is a sports tourer not a sports bike I guess, but I fitted that with a full packrack way back after doing one of the rides with Richard Scoular back in the old days of e-riders. Re-cycled was there on the (now Motu's) XLV, Kerry McDonald back when he had a GSXR1100 and others. We did a round the mountain run from Welly. For me, met them at Paremata Shell and we went Wanganui, Paraparas, Top O' The Bruce for lunch, Waiouru, Vinegar Hill, Cheltenham, Ashhurst, Saddle Road, Woodville, Wairarapa, 'tukas, and home again and I clocked up about 850km that day.

The bugger was though, stop for a break, take photos, I'm busy tucking my camera away and the other buggers are disappearing into the distance. Solution, packrack and zip up bag and I can now chuck my camera in the bag quick smart and go too. What would the rides be without the pics eh?

I wouldn't go without the bag on the back now and the Ventura style is tucked behind you, you'd never know it was there really. Want more luggage space, zip on the second bag all without marking your paint. Beautiful!!

Were you somehow thinking a pack rack would slow you down besides you thinking it just looks stupid? The first doesn't happen at all and the second I aint worried about.
    Cheers

I've had packracks on all my bikes including a Ducati.

Sportbike or not, I can't do two weeks in the south island every year with whatever I can stuff under the seat.

I'd like to see you try ....

And here was I thinking you'd all bought sportsbikes in the knowledge that they arent supposed to carry anything, and that you were all prepared to live with it. Maybe the reality that they are useless except for day trips has hit and you are all having to defend putting something butt-ugly on your bikes to make them worth buying...

... and BMW's can carry stuff without racks or panniers, is that what you are saying, or that they look butt ugly already so it doesn't matter? I'm getting a bit lost with your logic here.

I've got a tank bag as well, I can get everything that me & my wife needs for an overnight stay in it. Although it's a bit of a squeeze.

By the logic of this thread it sounds like all luggage is out of the question.

No, I brought it with the intention of adding luggage to it when I needed it.

Why does it matter so much? Why do you care what others do to their bike? How can you not understand that it's better to add luggage to a bike and be able to take it away for an extended period of time than to leave it sitting in the garage. Are you stupid?
