Biker down in Manawatu last night (26 December)

Yep was talking to brett at wanganui he was having such a great day.
They would come around a corner hanging it sideways brett giving the crowd
the big thump's up with grin on his face,a real growd please'r that day.
One thing i will never forget.

Got a couple of pics at Wanganui sorry they are a bit out of focus.

Wished I hadn't missed getting a pic of the big sideways they did on this corner (Holden) on the cooldown lap.

Can any here explain the corner the took Brett? Is it the one just before the main Highway?

Sorry I didn't get to know you. Condolences to all his family and friends. One of his relatives is a friend of my Mum's in Tauranga. We had dinner with her after the funeral. It sounded an awesome send off for an awesome guy.

Yes, I can. It is 6km from my house.
I rode past the accident site today (on my way to Manfeild).

Unfortunately Brett hit the pole about 70 metres after the corner at the bottom of the hill.
Not a Lamp post as the paper said, but a power pole.
That fact confused me initially, as there is very little lighting after you get off the main highway, as I think you know Garry.

Anyhow, for those that aren't local I will describe the corner in detail.
I also have a very strong theory on how the accident occurred, but I will keep that to myself, as it may not be the best thing to share here... and I'm by no means an accident investigator. PM me if you want my theory after you have read the description of the corner.

Okay: There is a down hill section with a passing lane on the other side of the road. Apparently Brett utilised this moments before.
At the bottom of the hill there is a 65k RH bend.
This bend is tricky as it tightens half way through.
As you tip the bike in a bit more (note this doesn't matter to cars), you ride over a road repair about the wheelbase of your bike.
Then there are a few other minor repairs on the exit, but nothing to worry about.

Another Caution with this one: After a shower that has followed a long hot spell, all the diesel, and sheep muck and all other stuff collect at the bottom of the hill.
There is also a (shingle) driveway on the exit, so the mailbox can also be a hazard. Then there is the pole.
It looks a long was when you stand there, but in real time it is less than 2 seconds away.

How he managed to hit the pole? You can guess, or PM me, and I'll give you my theory. Else I will leave it. Not the place here you understand.

To sum it all up, Brett had all the holes in the cheese line up.

RIP Mate. Didn't know you, but I stood there for a minutes silence to pay my respects to a fallen rider.
Reminded me how fast it can all turn to custard.

Today I pick up a copy of the August Kiwi Rider and flicking through it find a page on Brett written by a 16 year old from a family he was friends with, it caught me a bit by suprise and bought more than one tear to my eyes

I'm looking forward to Wanagnui, I'm just not sure what it will be like without catching up with him

Was great to read something about Brett and remember the good times, and realise how much we all miss him. It still amazes me how many peoples lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.

I often think about you Brett while on the bike, riding that guzzy with your trade mark style. What a great mate.

Well after lots of hard work and long talks, the first Brett Sproull Memorial trophy will be handed out at Wanganui this year – exactly 1 year after my friend lost his life while returning home from racing.

Johhny B his rider will be handing out the trophy this year.

I am soooo happy that this has come together and I could arrange it for him and his family.

First short bike over the line in the second race will win it every year from now on. That was his last race, so it makes sense that is where his life is celebrated by the people who do what he loved so much.
