. I would much rather have a new 1050 Tiger or similar as the most road-oriented bike for touring NZ. That is, rather than a full-on road bike; but really I'd struggle to buy anything that didn't have at least gravel road pretensions.
Geez I'm glad I'm not as old as you are to remember all that stuff from way back then!!
I take your point via the new Tiger and our sealed roads - the same reason we like our adventure bikes on big road trips

Uh, Yamaha, way back in 1991 with the TDM 850? They billed it as the "New Sports". That thing was a blast. Should've traded it against the Tiger (in the rare Sandstorm colour) rather than the Trophy.

    Cheers,
    Colin

I like what I see, so far!

Well just compared to it's self really.

I would quite happily take my Tiger anywhere on that test area, so don't see that as a issue.

What it does show (to those who know the difference) is just how well that BMW have put the bike together to suit their customers needs.

As an all round venture bike, I think, on what I have seen so far, you have to give credit where credit is due, the Krauts have done a good job on this one.

Give the customers what "they" want not what you (Honda etc) want to sell them.

I am not an enthusiast for BMW normally but shit, they have done what I have always wanted "Honda" to do and I respect them for that.

To me it looks like a very good venture bike but I will not be buying one.

I like my Tiger too much and so does Mrs O/rider. Nough said!

Can't afford to quarrell with her indoors! She really bought the Tiger anyway! Cheers John.

    Ugly

Line the two up and take both for a test ride on and off road, you will be in for a big surprise. I went down the south Island in Feb last and I did 800 ks on gravel. No different to the 955 only better front forks, and up on power maybe. I guess the Bemmer will sell to it's usual bunch of brainwashed nerds.

I read on the triumph grapevine they are bringing a true of road bike to be powered with a detuned Daytona 675 motor. Hang on to your cash. This motor is the finest triumph have produced in a decade.

Another bit of good news is that in Australasia Triumph knocked Harley and BMW for selling more none Japanese bikes. So that little factory located at Hinckley in Leicestershire. Has picked up the top awards in most classes now for three years running. Not bad for a small time bike builder.

And who was it that said the new tiger looks horrible. And you think the beemer 800 looks better. Jesus Christ dude in comparrison. That would be like saying Rachael Hunter is unatractive, and Helen Clark was far better looker.

Neither at this stage. I am planning to leave the DR in Oz post my circumnavigation trip next June/July, for future trips for me and friends to use!!
However, the K-R does not seem to get much work now I'm into Adv, and the new 800 with its 85hp would suit me down to the ground as an only bike to do everything I currently do, so its future will be reacessed after the 800 is working for me.

[QUOTE=huck farley;1357885] I guess the Bemmer will sell to it's usual bunch of brainwashed nerds. QUOTE]

There are some 'issues' here I thinks............................................ ....

You REALLY should know me before you pidgeonhole me, Huck, really you oughta.

I am forming some real interesting opinions of you and your forefathers, however, I may be wrong, and it would be unreasonable to judge you without the benefit of knowing you first, Huck.

And, beauty is still in the eye etc. I personally think the 1050 is a stunning looker, well engineered no question, without the benefit of a test ride I am still prepared to go out on a limb and say that I think it is probably the bestest and most well suited to our conditions of bikes. Very 'real world' motorcycle. I would be very happy to own 1 I can tell you, however, my type of riding is not quite where the Tiger is.

    There!

There's a dvd out which is about 3 guys traveling across Europe and have dual purpose BMW's and they couldnt stand up to the conditions they had alot of mechanical problems along the way and one of them ended up buying some old dunga of a bike to travel on.

I wonder if this one will be able to stand up to its purpose.

Doesn't look like you will be having the BMW 800 GS on your shopping list then Huck!

You may have missed the point of the thread, it was just to look at the new model BMW have produced for "their" customers, a nice change in the bike producing world.

Triumph didn't continue to progress the Tiger as an "off road" bike with the new 1050, they (deliberately) turned it into a road bike, an upright sports bike and by all accounts they got it right for that market!

The thread wasn't intended to compare the new 800 with the new Tiger 1050.

You are quite correct, they are definitely two very different bikes! Cheers John.

Missed the point, don't want a motard or another single; got a perfectly good DR650...why would I want a fuckn KTM single? More HP? can't use it. More maintainance? don't want it. Orange? Fuck, why?

You stick with ur katies Oscar.
