Source for tyre patches - the sort that use gunpowder ?

I have an inner tube that needs patching.

I don't trust the glued on patches.

Does anyone know where to get nowdays the good type of tyre patch, the ones that have a pad impreganted with gunpowder

Y'know the ones I mean, you clamp them over the tube, light the gunpowder and get well clear. Once the smoke has cleared you have a really good vulcanised patch

I've found the special clamp thingy but I can't locate a source for the patches. Asked at Repco and the kid just stared ta me.

You should, I haven't seen one that was properly applied fail and they are usable within minutes, personally I wont use a patched tube, although I guess it depends on application

Although I have heard of them I think you're a few decades to late, after 20+ years in the tyre industry I have not once seen them , if you do get some I'd be interested in seeing them used

Actually the best places to try would probably be old country garages, they might have some new old stock

I miss the old Stenor welder.We had vulcanising patch rubber in rolls....cut the patch to any shape you liked and welded it on,branded.Never had a Stenor welded patch fail.We used to weld tyre cases with cuts from bead to tread - put the whole tyre into the welder.Choice bit of gear every good tyre shop had.

Are tubes really that expensive? Mine was roughly $30. Or is it some bizarre size?

One of my favourite pieces of tyre repair kit was the stenor, we used to use one that had a fuse, set it up with whatecer you're repairing, put the fuse in and walk away, when it was up to temp the fuse burnt through and it turned off

No they're not, but to fix a tube only costs a few cents
