    Molesworth-Rainbow update

Thought with all the interest lately in these 2 roads, to keep weather updates etc on one thread....

Molesworth. Easy road, no permit, no toll, approx 210 km service station Hanmer to service station Blenheim. Open till somewhere in February, weather depending. Ring DOC

Rainbow. Bit more demanding, more Scenic. St. Arnaud service station to Hanmer service station 120 kms. $10 toll for bike, $20 for car.
Open till second week march. Ring Doc.

went through last week.Dry and easy fording Rainbow.
Went through Yesterday, and had rain the day before and a bit yesterday.
Fords had become noticably wetter, still easy to ford, but would give you wet ankles if misjudged.

So keep an eye on the weather if you plan the trip....
If you can only do 1 of the 2, The Rainbow is the nicer one,
St Arnoud a lovely liitle town to visit with Petrol , accomodation and a General store.

    Enjoy

If you're riding through fords, remember to Check, Clean & Dry. Bikes can spread didymo just as effectively as fishermen or kayakers.

Good point considering there is Didymo in the Clarance. We don't want it spread over island saddle into the Wairau. Other option is just to stay dry when going up or down the Rainbow between Island Saddle and Hanmer. There is a bridge at every ford!

Good points indeed, use bridge when given the option...(southern end)
Northern end however only has fords-dry on "normal"days but wet to very wet after rain!.....

Think I'll just ride thru the Holdens then.

And dogs. But either people are interested in doing their bit to slow the spread or they shouldn't be using the Great Outdoors.
