Hope that dont go to PD first time Ive smiled tonight.

Jrandom does have a point..when I was working at National bank we could not bypass the internet restrictions which were placed on our workstations....

Ment we had to work...even during breaks we were not allowed to surf the internet because of the level of security involved..

Most work places I know do not allow internet for personal use.

Personally Id' say leave it to the IT geeks who are trained and know how to do it without fucking it up...

But on the other hand its a similar concept to "cash under the table" but in this instance its the internet..

oh fuck Im thinking too hard here gota go.

I believe that dan was referring to it is possible to type in a single chained address that brings up the page in the browser as normal but as far as the local pc (or sniffing software) knows you are visiting as site called proxy4free.

People I know do it but I don't want to get fired and so I don't.

Nobody on KB needs to 'camp out' in threads. The quote notification function is really handy.

Is this an offical proscription from on high ? In which case it may be backed up by the DHB (or whoever the cappo di tutti capo org is) IT geeks. Who will know exactly what you are doing, and will probably pot you for it.

Or is it just your level boss being anal? In which case the problem is much simpler.

OH, and most *enlightened* businesses nowdays allow 'reasonable' use internet access for staff. Exceptions are government organisations (because they always have a pineapple up their collective arse), very small businesses (cos they think it will cost them money), and banks (cos they are paranoid).

Dan, Jrandom does have a point. Loss of productivity due to internet surfing is a world-wide problem ... and it is regarded as a form of theft.

The trouble is that reasonable use gets allowed and somebody abuses it so they clamp down and reasonable users suffer.

We've just had to do this because of such issues. A couple of people looked like they were spending the whole day on tardme. We can see the sites visited and the computer/user. We have to because when someone hits a worm/virus/sniffer we need to get the flag within seconds so that we can deal with it.

Nobody wants to spoil anyone's general enjoyment and use of the facilities but one or more of your co-workers will or have fucked it up ...so now you all pay. What your bosses should do is let it drop who that person was and then the staff will all beat up on them - problem solved.

Well then using a proxy site will really fuck you up. They hide which sites you are going to, but immediately betray the fact you are hiding from them. The exact opposite of what you want.

Mr Winter's onto it. VPNs are they only real way out of this situation, as I'm sure most workplaces wouldn't object to you logging into your home server via ssh to grab some work files you forgot

Was fun at school to play with this stuff, but it seems a bit childish doing it at your workplace.

I hope there was better evidence than "looked like"...

This is one of my personal bugbears - Management who check your internet usage as a way of seeing who's working. If the only way they have of measuring your productivity is checking your time on the net then they have far bigger problems than a few people checking tardme.

I suggest that you never work for a bank - based on personal experience here, because its not only computer log on usage they monitor its damn phone calls as well, including personal calls! lol

That is poor management (unless they are proving that your excuse of being "too busy" to finish work is just that, an excuse). But on the flip side are employees who achieve exactly what they are tasked without ever stretching themselves or taking initiative, then expect a pay rise at the end of the year.

NZ has one of the lowest productivity outputs in the oecd. And now the highest house prices according the the nz herald.

Actually we don't go looking. The firewall system monitors internet traffic by a number of parameters and produces a monthly report of that traffic - we have to pay heavily for overruns to our volume plan.

When the use graph shows the Tardme bar 4 times higher than anything else you have to investigate. So no, we don't sit and monitor people's internet use, we react to major exceptions to business-as-usual. Therefore, those who abuse the system get spoken to about it.
