    Carrying extra fuel

I'm Riding an XT600 with aluminium pannier set up and am thinking of getting
some brackets fabricated on both of the panniers themselves or the frames
to hold two 5 liter jerry cans. Has anyone done anything similar that they have
photos of. I know it's pretty straight forward but am interested to see how other people have gone about it. It would be nice to have them removable or foldable
so they wasent always protruding if not in use. also, can anyone reccomend anyone in the Taupo area that may be able to do it for me?

    Cheers

Can't help much with ideas, I'd probably use some sort of fold out shelf with a small tie-down holding the can. A cunning idea I saw on advrider once was an alloy tank that sat inside the pannier rack on the non-exhaust side. Another setup I saw had small fuel cans strapped underneath the panniers.

For someone to do the job go & see my mate Mike Connor at Taupo Sheetmetals, 17 Totara St. He's a pretty sharp engineer, he is often quite busy though.

    Cheers

If I was on my computer I would have some pics for you, but I will either post or pm them to you in a week when I get home.

Here's a couple of links for you - I'm going to try a Nomad tank on the back rack - can be easily taken off when bike moves on etc ...

Why you need to carry extra fuel? Doesn't the XT600 have a tank big enough for the distances between NZ gas stations? And if so why an extra 10 litres? I've ridden widely through NZ - I found that a gas tank holding 15 litres is plenty. So perhaps 5 litres is all the extra you'll need. Or are you off to Oz?

I for one would like a 25l tank.
You can string together some adventure rides that don't go near a petrol station for quite some distances.

I have seen it on an old xt 500 that went across africa in the early eighties...made to fit steel American army cans. Paulj made a rack to fit his enormously big pannierboxes, they would easily support the weight of fuel. I am sure he wouldn't mind I attach pic.
    Good luck

5 liter is for water and 5 for fuel. I camp out mostly so ride to some pretty secluded spots, having some back-up fuel and water
is an extra security that will allow me to push the boundaries a little further and allow me to free up the three liters of water I am
currently carrying on my back whilst distributing the weight evenly on both sides of the bike.

The XT600 gets 200km's before reserve. It's just nice to have a longer range. I have an acerbis 23 litre tank on mine. The range is adequate now. When you are exploring in the back blocks 200kms just doesn't cut it. Cary's Nomad tank is a good option and removable when you don't need it on there.

you could try and just fit a 5 litre fuel can and some water in your bag and camp next to a river for your water - just boil it on a camp fire. Great fun !
