this ride is a bit different to the rest,

it is follow the leader, meaning we haev a lead bike in front (me) and you are not alloud to pass me,

the ride is 80km long, we stop in the middle for a lunch/fuel stop, it is at a woolshed overlooking the west coast, we provide a lunch truck for food, and a fuel truck for fuel, you can also buy lunch as well,

just before lunch there are sand dunes to play in, and just after lunch we go down teh beach for 2km,

this sort of ride does not suit everybody (i don;t espect to see danger their with only 80-85km on offer ), it is more of an adventure than all out riding of some other rides, i really enjoy this ride as it is a bit more laid back, with stuff you do not really see that oftem

    learner

I went up to Woodhill last weekend and despite being really soft and a newbie to off roading I had a good time. I think a lot of it was down to having bought a nice light KDX200.
Still had arm and leg aches for two days.

I'd like to do the MR Motorcycles Waikaretu run and maybe take my son who is 13 and has been riding for a few weeks. He has a Honda 100 and seems to have picked it up quite well.
Any thoughts on the run for a learner?

I'll be there, might even bring me camera along, haven't touched the DR since Desert Storm.
Did this ride last year, on my daughters DRZ125 that was had work for that little bike, with my fat ass on it.
    good fun thou.
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

Sorry change of plans, got the gran kids so, will head out to the sandpit, the smaller kids would not be able to handle that ride.
and I so wanted to do it.
    next time
    cheers John.

    Waikaretu Run

With my 3 hours experience and my 13 year old sons few hours round the local car park, we set off to have a go at this run.
Bit daunting for my son, kept stalling the Honda 100 on the hills and found the going a bit hard on the first section. We ended up not finishing the section as we were last and one of the marshals had to guide us up to the road so we could go to the lunch stop.
I was not sure if my son wanted to continue but to his credit he said yes and he wanted to do the beach run.
The second half was much easier than the first with more rolling farmland and less steep hills. He found the sand fine and really enjoyed going up and down the beach ( got a few pictures along the way).
On the way home after a Pokeno ice cream he said that he said he had fallen off at least 10 times, including falling into the water off a well past its best by 1/2 round timber bridge.
He has a limp today but a real feeling of " I did it", (alas no certificate of shirt.)
My KDX 200 went perfectly, but I need a sidestand as its hard to restart when I lie it down and run to help.
I find it surprisingly torquey for what I expected of a 2 stroke.
Very well organized run and thanks to the marshals who helped us out.
I think its back to Woodhill for more practice.
Next weekend its off to Puke on the R50/5....bit more relaxing.
