Converting my Australian Licence

The time has come for me to convert my Australian Full Licence to a New Zealand one.

There's a few points I like to highlight before I continue.

*Since I haven't held my Full Australian Motorcycle Licence for more than 2 years the LTSA is going to make me sit the FULL licensing test here.

*Since my Victorian (Australian) Licence doesn't actually have a issue date, even if I did have it for more than 2 years I would have to get an offical transcript from Vic Roads. But I haven't so, this doesn't really matter...

*Bear in mind, I also have to do the theory test

*I rang LTSA early last year about me having an Australian Motorcycle licence but also having a New Zealand Drivers Licence. They tell me since I have a New Zealand licence, I must adhere to my NZ licence conditions first and legally I can't ride a Motorcycle even though I have a Australian Motorcycle Licence. A strange rule but I've been doing this the whole time and haven't had any trouble.

*finally, I don't own a 250 cc bike


Now I was hoping I can get away converting my licence by not sitting the practical test but I guess this isn't gonna work out..

Plus, I probably have to turn up on a 250 as opposed to a 929?

Looks to me like there isn't anyway you're gonna get away with not doing the practical test so you may be able to borrow a 250 off someone on KB, otherwise you may have to rent one one or steal one?

And the code is all you need.. it actually has every single question that's in the test, answered in the road code. Bloody stupid in my opinion, may want to go to a magazine store and just flick through a current one, see if there's any major differences but it really is mostly common sense.

Yeah this is what I would do. As it saves you having to pay for the cost of the practical test.

On another note. When I transferred my Philippine license to an NZ license (Which you have to sit the pratical BTW). I was able to sit it on a 400cc cause technically I had a full license.

I converted a uk full licence (feck off i'm not a pom), had to sit the test because of the two year rule but did it on a 600 with no problems. was back in '99.

Me & the missus were shitting ourselves worrying about having been in NZ for a year and not converted our licenses. The lady at he AA said that it is not when you FIRSTenter NZ, but when you LAST entered NZ. All you have to do is leave NZ and then come back and you get another 12 months of foreign licence driving. Crazy but true!

The only time this does not apply is if you get a PR visa in which case it is 12 months from the date of the PR stamp. If you are an Aussie, you don't need PR:-)

I did the 33 question test about 20 times and scored 100% in both my bike and car test.

One of the reasons I want to convert my Licence ASAP is because of Insurance.

Of course I have no problem getting insurance with an Australian Licence, just the fact that I also hold a NZ Drivers Licence and the LTSA say, I cannot LEGALLY ride a bike in NZ since I have to adhere to my NZ Licence conditions.

So what that means is they don't care if I have an Australian Licence, it's the fact I hold a NZ Car Licence.

If I didn't hold a NZ Driver Licence and only have a Australian Licence then I won't have this issue.

Like I mentioned I haven't been in trouble so far but say I was involved in an accident or got pulled over, they would see my bike registered on my NZ Car Licence and then I whipp out my Aussie Licence.

Do you begin see the irony of this?

Try talking to the AA people to see if there is a hoop hole or see if they can help you out in some way.

At the end of the day, I reckon the best thing for me to do is convert the licence.

Went over to Melbourne to work and study, so decided to get my Motorcycle Liecence there also.

And I come back back the LTSA tell s me I can't ride a bike...

If I knew this was gonna happen I should've stayed in Melbourne.... haha..

Mate you may be able to get an exemption on the cc rating of the bike you ride for the tests.

I was a bit slack changing mine over.

The guy at the AA's quote was - 'we can't tell - they don't stamp your visas'.
