    Security wire thingy?

I vaguely recall seeing an add somewhere for a stainless wire strop that allowed you to secure soft luggage to your bike by threading it though pannier/bag handles etc and padlocking it to the frame.

Anyone know where I could find such a beasty or has anyone used one and care to comment on how useful it was?

    cheers

They were on the WW Whites stand at Paeroa last year so avail from / thru most bike shops.

I think, I've seen them on tramping shops in Wellington (I may be thinking of the wrong think tho).

Most outdoors shops have a thing called pacsafe. A wire mesh that completly envelopes your pack and then you stick a pacdlock through it. Might need a short cable to lock it to the frame but better then just putting a wire rope through the handles of soft bags. Linky

Never used one myself but seems like a better idea.

I used a couple of Pacsafes, they were incredibly useful. I bought the small size secondhand on Trademe, and put in inside the soft pannier, so it didn't spoil the looks and was discreet. Then looped the loose end around the frame.
When the soft panniers were zipped up, the only thing telling you it was pacsafed was the steel cable coming out of the bag by the closed zip.

The cable can be cut by hefty pliers, but it will defeat a leatherman or small pliers.
Good to prevent opportunistic thieves, but not someone determined. But 99% of thieving from bikes in public is opportunistic, so it'll do.

The drawstring cable is used to lock it to the frame, it's all included. The drawstring cable is much heavier duty than the mesh it self.

I've seen them Pacsafe thingys and always thought that'd be nice but never thought about them when I have actually had the cash to get some.
    Maybe later.

    Thanks guys

looks like the pcsafe is the thing I need.

Do you guys leave soft panniers etc on you bikes in places like the Interislander?

I'm just setting up the DT with some proper carrying capacity as Tri Boy and I are heading down to Christchurch next Thursday.

    Cheers

Stuff on the bike should be reasonably safe on the Interislander - passengers arn't allowed access to the vehicle decks and there is CCTV monitoring. Hopefully the crew have better things to do than steal from vehicles.
I've never lost anyhitng of my bike in all the crossings I've done - but the bike has always had lockable hard cases and topbox
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

I would rate the interislander as pretty secure, left soft luggage on the there all the time but as transalper says, I carry my valuables with me.

When I first saw the BMW K1200LT, it came with plastic-coated wire strops for securing your helmet and other stuff. At the time the bodywork on my '94 Tiger was too wide for the helmet locks to work. Went to a ship chandlers and had some short lengths of stainless wire cable made up with crimped loops in the ends. Hook one end on the helmet lock, through the helmet D ring, then hook the other end back on the helmet lock. Schweet!

I also had a much longer length made up that could be fed through the sleeve of a couple of jackets. Still carry that strop with me today.

The interislander is more secure than leaving your bike at remote track heads while you go off tramping!
    Cheers,
