Somebody with access to Google Earth could check the elevations of the Crown Range Road summit and the summit of Arthurs Pass and report back with their findings, please (don't have GE at work, or I'd do it myself).

    Yeah, apparently.
It was only sealed about 5 and half years ago.

Pity, I live 30 mins from there, never ridden a bike over it though. Never will. Hard work in the van.

Highest public road in the country, sealed or unsealed.

HASL 1121m, compared to Arthur's Pass at a paltry HASL 924m.

    No contest!

    Crown Range: 1121m ASL

    Artur's Pass: 924m ASL

In fact, I think it's the highes public road in Australasia, if not the
    Southern Hemisphere.

Prolly some higher in South America?

I'll lend you a bike some time and we'll go for a trip over to Wanaka or further if you like.

No on at least one of those. Cabramurra is Australia's highest town. It's 1488m above sea level. I have ridden an FJR1300T through it, and its roads are most excellently sealed (it's in the middle of a 250km stretch of awesome twisties).

While there are roads way higher than that in South America -- indeed the highest being 5059m above sea level, I don't know at what stage the seal ends.

    Ok, I stand corrected.

    Still a bloody good ride!

Took the Thunderbird over it one day - needed both sides of the road and abit more besides and the body roll you had to believe!!

And probably used 4 litres of premium getting up there.

But at least the campers vans pulled over unlike when I have been over on the bike.
