Where (beginner) off-road near Chch?

Will have my bike today, and would like to try some dirt this week.

Friends suggest the Waimak river area, which is close to me. Any other suggestions ?

I should be fine on the road, have ridden before, its the dirt/shingle skills that I need to build up.
