Need some info on 250cc bikes

As far as the resale goes we have 4 children and 2 of them are only a couple of years off learning to ride themselves so dont plan on selling it for years.
How do you mean those Viragos are underpowered? Are they not about the same hp as the Hyosung 250?

No, the Viragos are around 22 hp and the Hyo's are close to 30 and that is enough to make a difference at 100+ kph. I met a guy a couple of weeks ago in a parking lot - I asked him about his bike and I do think it was a Virago - he said it was not a highway bike and when I asked him what he meant by that he said it would not sonsistently keep up at highway speeds. His was a new bike.

If you are not comfortable test driving a bike, find a full license biker who will do a test drive for you, or get the owner to follow you in your car on the open road and see if it can pass your car when you are doing 95 - 100 kph. The Viragos do look nice and it was my first choice until I did research.

So what did you think of the GN? You're not talking about getting another one, so I presume it wasn't everything your heart desires! I think someone said the Virago has 22 hp? That's not much above GN250/Scorpio territory so it's not going to be a ball of fire on the open road, especially with the cruiser riding position. But if that amount of power is enough for you, why not a Scorpio?

I have a Hyosung GT250 (note the missing R) costs around $6500 new.

I fill up at around the 300km mark (today's was 12L fill up) but others have reported 400km per tank (on the 250r)
Does 100kph happily with my 106kg lump on it, and also the same with 2x105 kg lumps on it's back.
Top speed so far has been 165kph (or so I have been told )

I had a few issues in the first 5000ks but these were all fixed under warranty and am about to hit 20000ks in the next week or so.
"gw555" has done about 60000ks on his Hyosung GT250.

With my Hyosung GT250, the fuel consumption from Napier to Masterton was:
3.55 litres per 100 km
= 80 mpg IMP = 66 mpg USA

Fuel Tank Capacity = 17 litres >> so with a full tank on the open road you can get 480 km maximum, or safely 400 km

I found the gn250 very slow, heavy handling and its a bit small really. I really have had conflicting info as to the virago's handling on the open road. I think its just going to come down to the test drives.

Just had a look on TM and thought I would give you all an update. Due to the fact that my husband is buying a bike atm too I have a budget of around 5k that I would not like to go over if I can avoid it.
We plan on pillioning our children on the back of my bike so it needs to be able to handle that and be comfortable for them.
I am on the short side so I need a low seated bike (heace the lean toward the crusiers)
I need it to be able to do 100k without the engine peaking out, and be able to follow my husband on his bike on the open road (no speeding, just cruising)
That all being said I think the hyosung GT might be too big for me but I will try one out first before I rule it out.
Keep you all posted after the weekend...we are off bike hunting....

At a guess it's going to be to high for you.
There's the hyosung cruiser (GV250) that you can pick-up for less than $5k second hand.

But would that not just be around the same specs as the xv250 virago? Seems to be much of a muchness in the 250 cruisers?

And those Virago's are underpowered so before you buy take it out on the open road and see if it can keep up with traffic - in a headwind - and pass safely.

I have to ask if you have ever ridden a Virago. I ran ScorpyGirl's new one in up and down the Southern motorway in 2001 every day to work and it hauled my 100 kg bulk along at 100-120 kph quite easily. No problem passing cars or trucks.

As with most cruisers, a screen will deflect the worst of the wind, so headwinds are not a problem.

By comparison, the Hyosung GV 250 has 30 hp, so if I had a choice between the Virago or GV 250 I'd go with the GV 250.

Anyway, its good to know that the Virago can cruise along on the motorway no problems.

Screens are good for long trips or daily commuting. I had a small GIVI screen fitted and it does keep my chest from being buffeted - after an hour or so it can be tiring with no screen or fairing.

The GT250R is quite hard on your hands while going slow, even for the skinny girls and boys. On the open road they are awesome, but you must have your sportbike steering sorted, or some quality supervision while you get it sorted.

Even my GT650R is not a putt-around bike - my wrists are taking lots of time to adjust. I have never used my wrists this much.. not my left one anyway..

DB, I think you mean that the GT250 and GT250R have the same engine (and frame), not "GV". Right?

I test drove a GT250R and after 10 minutes by right wrist ached - I smashed it up bad years ago. I hear that riders can toughen up and get used to the forward leaning wrist thing but in my case that would not happen. Anyway, I was so impressed with the Hyosung that I test drove, I bought one without a fairing and without wrist ache handlebars.
