HI,

Always been keen on getting a offroad style bike and have decided it's time to do it as I'm already 1/3 of a century old!
Already have a 180kg 1000cc Bimota so big trips are taken care of - Am not at all interested in another road bike.

I want to use it around town mainly hooning round town and but also have off road and gravel road capability for future club rides etc.
Looking at a off road bike that's street legal under 6k:
eg WR400/426/450 DRZ400 or RMX, EC300 possibly etc.
Thinking a DR650 or XR/XT 600 will be too heavy and not offer the same acceleration etc.
Electric start, kick or both is fine.

I look after my gear very well and do all my own work.
(My RG500 had done nearly 50k on it's pistons and rings when I sold it on still going well)
Even the XR's seem to need rebuilding way more than a road bike so I'm expecting maintenance galore!
Can't be as bad as having to remove a 70-80kg motor
out everytime you check the valve clearance or removing
a one piece front fairing by yourself to top up oil

So are there any lemon models to avoid like the plague?

Some for sale even have 2 sets of wheels with them!

As far I can find out the "S" was the heavier road model
with pillion pegs etc - is the one advertised an "E" actually an "S"??
- is either one worth checking out?
I can't afford a SM model.

i would go for the WR but keep an eye out the odd ktm pops up on TM with motard set up as well as off road rims

The wr250 woul be better suited for off road use as its lighter then the drz more nimble.
But for value for money i wouldn't go past the drz400, mint on the road(followed one back from the cold kiwi, well exced 100kph)
And also very good off road, just a tad heave for a learner.

for what you are looking for i think the DRZ400 is the best option, although not as trick and light as the KTM's and WRF's they are a better option if you are doing alot of road miles, they are less maintence, and a longer lasting engine, they are still very off road capeable,

the one BUddy L listed is an awesome deal, the motard wheel set up is $2500 new, for $5000 its a good deal, and with the off raod wheels for when you wnat to go trail riding, it noramlly takes about 30-40 minutes to chage everything over to trail riding spec,

The WRF I had my eye on, in the thread I posted up about buying a second hand dirt bike, well I used the buy now yeah, scored me a nice bike at a good price, only to be contacted by the seller saying he was sorry, but he had sold the bike 2 days earlyer, he thought he had removed the listing. was i pissed at the time.

So I still had 5K in the bank had a look around found another bike was about to work a deal with the seller, check my bank account, WTF lost 2.5K bloodly
Insurances and rates went out.

not going to buy much with $2.500 not something I would really want anyway.

Yeh when people sell there bikes elsewhere and don't cancel the auction or classified maybe Trademe should
put bad feedback on them as I'm sure it pisses a lot of
people off!

I have heard with the WR's I will have to replace the piston every 50 hours even if I look after it on the road and it's not thrashed - that will be a problem for me as 50 hours commuting is a few months.
I'd get an XR400 or XT400 but to get one with rego/wof is like finding rocking horse shit.

I was thinking if - and it's a big if! that I can find a road regoed RMX I can get longer piston intervals?
I ran a modified RG50 to work every day and found 5000km's was easy out of the rings - and it sat at 7000-8000rpm most of the time with a softer steel bore.

Heck the current high performance 4 strokes must in a bloody high state of tune to need pistons so often!

Yeah brought a new bike for the grandson, about 2 weeks ago, from scott, he hasn't had a chance to ride it yet, had a little play around my back yard, but thats it, was going to Take him out to the Sandpit today, too wet and windy or am i just getting old, he was so disappointed.
Trouble is he has to go into hospital on Monday for an Op, and wont be aloud to ride for at least 2 weeks, and he's got the North Harbour Mini Motocross, King of the North event coming up so wont have any ride time.

it all good took it out last week end as ridin round the local park just wasnt enough went down to thunder back out on the 9th MR Motor Cycle trail ride should be good might see you there look out for the suzuki marque (well be real popular if the weathers like this)
