No prob, I'll shoot away from work in the morning, get back and update you then. If there's any pics I think you need to see, I'll post them/email to you when I get home. (About 6pm)

Sounds like its all under control.... was in there on sat actually, checking out a Rocket3, was a bit disapointed really the engine looked worse/older than a 1970's Triumph car block, it was black.... but just down the rd ther was a red one out side the HD shop.... looked a bit better, had open pipes, that made a big differance.Originally Posted by SpankMe

Does anyone know of a local firm called Dynotech? They're supposed to have 600cc kits for the GB.
never heard of them myself, but im sure Wiseco will still do them, and/or HRC
how far are you going to go spankme? coz while your in there it could be worth doing more mods, conrod, cams, skim head, port inlet, make narrower the return oil gallery to carry more oil in head/better for wheelies (which is what the single is made for yeah?) needle roller bearings for cams, 6 speed CBX250RS gearbox almost sldies straight in without a problem,
Right, this would have been posted about 2 hrs ago, but I sold a car and during which someone closed down the web-page. I tell ya, it sucks being the only one out of 25 employees who knows what they're doing on a computer. Anyway, I went down there this morning and checked it over for you.
For a 1987 bike it is in reasonably quite good condition. Minor scarring on the fork legs, bit of road-gunk has marked the underneath of the s/s muffler, rear tyre is squarer than a 80's volvo wagon, but otherwise it appears fine. Paint is in good cond, as ius the seat etc. It shows no signs of being dropped, no scuffs on levers, footpegs, etc, and no major marks around the steering stops. I got Chris to start her up, and this is where my only concern lies. While it started and idled fine (after about 4-5 prods on the starter button) with a little choke, and blew no excessive or blue smoke, the starting process was a little dubious. There is a heavy metal-on-metal clang/knock coming from the starter motor area. It is loud enough that it caused some concern to me, and it appeared as though the starter gear wasn't engaging properly. Chris said this is due to it being a single, and that its only intended for you to 'prod' the starter, rather than hold it down. This doesn't really wash with me, as no vehicle should be capable of making that sort of noise as a 'standard' feature.
So generally, a good looking, tight sounding bike. Once you've got past everyone within earshot listening to the racket coming from it as you start it. The problem, in my opinion, shouldn't be to hard to resolve, as it runs very well once going, and it just sounds as though the engagement process is to blame.
If there is anything else I can do, let me know. Tomorrow (wed) is my day off, so I can go past again if necessary.
Thanks onearmedbandit, thats great.
This is from the GB500 FAQ.
So the starter motor is a common problem and there is always the kick start. The only thing that concerns me about it is the $4250 price tag. Do you think he can be talked down a few hundred? All the other GB's with similar K's I've seen are around $3,500.6) What are the common problems/weaknesses with the GB?
Steve Wells:
Common problems with GB's:
1.) They _eat_ Camchains. I go through one about every 15,000 Km. The standard cam-chain tensioner is not very efficient and tends to wear out causing it to eat cam-chains even quicker.
2.) Starter Moters. The electronic starter motor also tends to die fairly commonly on GB's. Either the solenoid will pack up, the clutch will or it will just wear out. GB's with working starter motors are not all that common.
3.) Handlebar placement. If you drop the bike, you can be almost certain that the handlebar on the side you drop it on will be pushed back into the petrol tank and leave a fairly large dent. GB's without these dents aren't too common. Only thing to be done about it is lock the handles as far forward as possible and hope.
4.) Swingarm pivots. The sleeves used for these pivots are made of nylon, and wear out fairly quickly causing lots of rear-end movement. I've had mine replaced with metal rollers. If these pivots wear out and start chewing onto the swingarm axle, then it starts getting expensive.
I'm getting the Weisco parts costed at the mo and I've found a local distributor for Koni rear suspension.Originally Posted by Kwaka-Kid
I don't wont to do anything to the motor that will make it less reliable, require more maintenance or make it wear faster. But I will look into other stuff later. It's a question of cost at the mo.
Almost? What needs to be done to make it fit and who has done it before. Would need to know that it not only works, but works well.Originally Posted by Kwaka-Kid

Would he take a few hundred less? My guess is yeah, maybe. Its not in the front part of their shop, more out the back. I'm sure they'd be happy to clear up a bit of room. I'm a car dealer, and while we hate discounting, and always aim for 'window', you'd be stupid to let a done deal walk out of the showroom for the sake of a few hundred dollars off asking. However, he was keen to emphasise how rare the 500's are compared to the 400's. He'll probably use that to support his case for maintaining the asking. Maybe use the starter noise (once comfirmed by them) as some leverage.
I've only been looking for a couple of weeks, but since then I have found 6 for sale. Another one I am looking at is this one in Palmerston North. I've tried to contact the guy through the that page but have had no reply.Originally Posted by onearmedbandit

It's the UK/US version which is a bit different from the one we have. Our version was made for the Japan market but didn't sell well so was dumped on us. That photo is a US bike and they do have emission controls.
