Not had a read of all of this, but I tend to flash oncoming traffic if I know of a hazard. Yesterday there was a bunch of Canadian ducks on the road trying to find a place to hide from the hunters. I had to stop the car as they would not move. Then one of them attacked my car, so I reversed away with the duck following noisily. In the end I got around them. As I was driving away a few cars came the other way and so I flashed my lights to warn them.

May the bridges I burn light the way.

I always flash and have only ever been pulled over once, the tosser in question suggested i should get out of the car as it apeared to have an electrical fault and maybe about to burst into flames, i simply pointed out i was driving a mitsubishi as was he and was complementing his taste in cars.

Don't do that! You'll wake the poor chaps up.

Oh, and I have developed an amazing, fail-safe trick for avoiding speed camera tickets: I call it "not speeding". No revenue from me!

Perhaps Kawerau is international if you live in Edgecombe. But back to the original thread ....... sort of

Some time ago I was returning to Sail City from the Bay of I at the end of the Anniversary weekend. We passed several speed cameras that were strategically placed at the end of passing lanes and long straights. When we came to the Dome Valley there was a large Police sign saying "Slow down; known accident area". Not a cop in sight as we passed through.

My problem is that this was obviously revenue gathering. The Police would have had my support if they had been out there pulling over the slow drivers so that the traffic could flow at the legal limit and therefore remove the need for people to feel the need to pass using a speed that although safe, was above the limit, and thus remove the real danger. Had they had a presence in the Dome Valley where they admit there are problems, their credibility would be maintained. I don't blame the individual officers as the positioning of police in these circumstances is most probably a policy put in place by those above.

And Yes I flash .... for all sorts of reasons .... but primarily for road safety.

The speed camera that pisses me off is the one at the top end of Taita Drive in Lower Hutt. It's a 50k zone with residential on one side and an empty river bank on the other. The road is also very wide. I personally feel it's pretty safe to exceed or even increase the speed limit there, but that's not my point.

My point is, I always thought it would be in the best interest of safety to have it further down the road where it was populated on both sides including a major sports field, and also has a school backing on to it with groups of 30 or so kids running up and down the footpath during the day for their P.E. class. Also with cars parking on the roadside to use the sports field, and that part of the road also being a bus route, the road tends to be quite narrow. Of course, generally people aren't completely stupid, and tend to lower their speed in this area.

I can't say I've seen any accident statistics from either of these areas, and as such my annoyances may be unfounded. But to me it still just reeks of revenue gathering.

i have heard (non traffic duty) cops referring to other Traffic duty cops as "snake" before, is it common and what started the nikname? Surely it has more significance than "snake in the grass"?
