Either that or have a look at the Huskie 250TXC which is their mx bike with enduro gearbox & electric start & is available in NZ.

The KTMs in my view had such high first gears for my sort of riding that if you put sprockets on them to fix that you lost the top end speed. The WR250 on the other hand has about a 29 or 30:1 first gear but will still do more than 165km/hr in top gear all on a five speed box not a 6 speed.

I found 1st a little fast too so put a rekluse centrifugal clutch in which was great for snotty trails. The new KTMs are lighter and more nimble now so there isn't much of a problem for trials type riders (me too)

Are they still running a 33/76 primary set giving a 2.3 primary ratio? (This is where the problem was with the KTMs in my view the primary was far too high)

If so even at the ratios you quoted above that bike (XCW) is running an overall first gear ratio of 19.98:1 which is flipping tall for a dirt bike.

I was moaning those years back about the 450 having a 16.7:1 first gear as per this thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...t=37756&page=2
    Cheers

I don't know Merv but I find 1st gear on my EXC pretty low for me. Often I just start in 2nd gear.

Yeah me two, I hardly ever use 1st, 2nd gear does everything well.

went to get some new brake pads and oil filter for klx couple of weeks ago and the kawi dealer in Trnga is also a husky dealer. Those bikes are bloody works of art - didn't ride one mind you but put my name down for the next test session at maddix park (and a sesh on klx 450 r ) - they look like they are trail weapons with all the lights etc.off they weigh nothing. most impressive but as with all husky's going back decades they are tall. and the Beemer buyout doesn't fill me confidence either. the TE 250 efi looked nice but was heavier with no fuel than the klx with a full tank one for the fans only i think and not cheap either.

Not only that but KTM have a six month warranty period. A couple of minor hiccups with my e-leg and at no cost, well its worth buying from a recognised dealer.

Wonder if this guy can give a warranty on a $1,000 starter?

Yeah if you could get it cheap enough it may be worth a punt, but for only a grand its not really worth it.
