Thanks for all of your comments on the previous Poll thread regarding paying for motorcycling parking in Wellington.

The next idea that has come up, is that WCC are looking at acquiring parking spaces in the private carparking buildings and making them especially for motorcycle parking.
This will result in secure, undercover parking with surveillance for added security.
There will be a charge for this service however, but it's looking like they will make it very fair & reasonable.

What's your thoughts on this?

AT the risk of being ungrateful (again), I think it's easier to steal motorcycles from a parking building than the side of the road, out in the open.

The carpark operators will also be losing inline, side by side parking to parallel type parks and they will charge like wounded bulls for that, because the carpark buildings for the most part are designed for maximum car density.

The current system is preferable to anything they are going to suggest. Not just because it is free.

How about Rego or Insurance levy based on regions which would cover parks in the major conurbations of those regions? This might even encourage people to use their bikes more often as the parking would still seem free, and amortized over the year x the number of motorcycle regos for an area would give you a better baseline idea of how many motorcycle parks would be needed over time.

You could use Census data to start with... Doh! Stats didn't include motorcycles as serious transport, did they? Morons.

Car parking buildings, fair and reasonable? Big fat lol.

If they did, it certainly would only be the first few months before Wilson's or Tournament jack up the prices to something phenomenal.

It's good to see people are thinking about it, but I feel like the driver for this is more about making some coin, with what's been suggested above.

What ever do you mean? The price for car parking is totally reasonable isn't it?

I dont like the idea of MY rego being used to pay for YOUR parking. I'm a fan of user pays - especially as I park my bike in a private, secure carpark at work. If they're going to charge for parking, it should be as all parking is - user pays.

Yours won't be - you live in Tauranga. Any plan to use private parking in a user pays situation will mean that it rapidly becomes cheaper to park in a metred caprpark and pay the fines on a daily basis.

I don't agree with the ides of adding it to Rego, or insurance for the following reasons.
1. not all Bike riders work in the CBD.
2. Some Bike riders own more than one registed bike.
3. Not all people insure there bikes.

If it comes down to paying for parks, then it should be some kind of user pays system

With reference to the above: 4. Not everyone takes their bike anywhere (in the CBD) they need to find a park for it. Like the weekend only riders, the cruiser riders etc who don't use their bike for commuting or to pop into town.

Make the cages move into the 'convenient' car parking buildings and free up a few more parks for bikes at the roadside. With instructions on how scooter riders should park their precious Vespa...

Parking buildings are not secure. "All care, no responsibility". If they were secure, they would be responsible.

I get the feeling these indoor parks could come at the expense of the ones the council already provides. The council has to ask itself are all the extra carparks (A couple of dozen spaces at the most) and revenue that they would gain is really worth it? I don't think so. The result will be scooters and bikes all over the footpaths.

WCC lost all control of this when they sold off the parking buildings to companies that have one policy - make all the money they can!!!

They are starting to get the idea.
Get rid of a few (emphasis on "few") carparks around town and make them available for bikes only. A slow progressive approach will allow better use of the space (approx 5 bikes per space that 1 car + 1 driver would use) is a better use of the resource.
By doing this on roadside parking spaces, it is council property so eliminates dealing with the conglomerate parking corporations and their money-making approach, rather than the "public service" council.

Yet again, Jim, you have shown a remarkable degree of arrogance and know-it-all-ism. Let me put it this way, so you'll get it (I'll try to use small words): No one else should be forced to pay for YOU to park your bike in town. Simple enough for you?
