    Hey Nudez
Why not sent a councillor on a jaunt/jollie/junket to Melbourne to see what they do about bike parking in that enlightened city??
Anywhere, all over the footpath, and for free!

If that was the case, I shouldn't have to pay for others to have accidents.

    yay Sels1,

I was just about to leap on and say why don't we act like a grown up cosmopolitan city like Melbourne, you know the one that beat us to the commonwealth games and "stole" a grand prix from Adelaide. Maybe they do these things because they have a more progressive attitude about what the city is there for - to be a place to live and enjoy living in, not to be a "model" environment the councillors can pat themselves on the back about how neat and tidy they've made it look.

"park em anywhere, as long as they don't get in the way", I say - Boulcott Street bikes were never in the way, and personally I find them good to look at, better than a bunch of cars.

Europe seems pretty tolerant also, not only of parking anywhere, but bikes and scooters being an accepted part of the traffic - even when they're crazy like in Rome, Paris, Lisbon, Seville - oh, pretty much everywhere really.

    Sorry, rant over.

    Cheers.

But that doesn't earn money or enhance Wellington's culture, which seem to be WCCs prime directives.

Get rid of a few (emphasis on "few") carparks around town and make them available for bikes only. A slow progressive approach will allow better use of the space (approx 5 bikes per space that 1 car + 1 driver would use) is a better use of the resource.
By doing this on roadside parking spaces, it is council property so eliminates dealing with the conglomerate parking corporations and their money-making approach, rather than the "public service" council.
Wrong mind-set dude. The reason they want to replace roadside parks with commercial building parks is to wash their hands of the problem. And at someone else's expense at that.

Probably, until biker's votes become critical to their survival. How can we encourage them to believe that's already the case?

Leave the status quo as is. The only thing we need to do is educate scooter riders that a bike parked on a side stand needs room beside it to be able to be stood up again in order for the rider to vacate the park. Good thing scooters are light and can be easily moved!
Why would anyone choose to drive a car!

If you really want to retain the status quo then do what we did in the early 80's
The council were removing all the bike parking--we said yea righto. So we parked 2 bikes per car park up and down queen st.
Funny--bike parking was reinstated pretty quick

Why two? A concerted effort by locals could see a huge number of parks filled up before the rush. Sort of motorsicular denial of service strategy.

making a poinbt--1 bike per park and the cages could sneak in the gap--2 bikes and the space is well occupied

Thought as much. Still, worth making the pooint that bikes take up WAY less room by just doing the one-per-park thing. One bike and an attitude orta keep the cages parkless. Although in Wgtn there's issues with the pay'n display thing, nowhere to safely bung the ticket...

What gets up my nose about all this parking thing is by where I work, there is a heap of pay parking with piddly stupid little 2 hour limits.

This is completely feckin useless (especialy where these ones are - not very close to the shops) as they are mostly *always* empty as no one 'who needs a park around there' needs it for less than three hours. So these parks sit there all day with no one in them and I'm talking at least 15 carparks!

Crikey if they would just turn it (or some of it at least) into bike parking it would really help out especially for those of us who have to cram into the Terrace parking spaces...eek I dread the day I come back to find my bike (and everyone elses) on it's side cos someone has tried to sneak into a non existant space in these lineups due to there not being enough bike parks.

Parking buildings? Hell no! It's easy to steal cars as well as bikes, just look at James Smiths. They apparently have cameras too?! I heard from a mate who had his car broken into and ripped off in there that the surveilance taping was so poor quality they couldn't get anything useful off it anyway...I'd rather risk a ticket for parking on the footpath or sum such place.

Does the James Smith carpark have a bad rep for bikes being stolen?

Funnyest thing was this really pissed off cage driver.
The protest was a well advertised but none the less peacefull one.
    Untill Mr angry came along.
He HAD to have a carpark outside the bank.
Totallly unfair and not right that 2 bikes should take up a CAR park
--even thogh he was indeed alone in his big ol car
So He grabs the bars of a lil cb125 twin.Starts to wheel it away.
Pity is the owner was in a burger joint not to far away.
His nickname wasn't Bear for no reason.
Funny--the bike got put back pretty fast and mr angry put the pamphlet in his pocket and drove off

Don't know any bikers that park there actually BUT I figure if the buggers have got time to break into several cars and rip them all off then they'd have time to pop a bike in the back of a van. This was happening a wee while back.

Just saying. I wouldn't park my bike in there...it's bloody dark and dingy too and as a chick I can say I'd rather be walking to my bike at night out in the open in Wellington city versus, going into a dark and possibly unattended carparking building!

    - sad that things have gotten like this actually isn't it?
