AUT riders - parking feedback needed

Hi, as from my old sticky on the Universities travel plan both UoA and AUT are revising bike parking spaces etc.

However, the Business School, WF, on Wakefield/Lorne St. currently allows bikes to park by the main entrance. Over 100 different bikes and scooters have used this area - so I know it is popular.

The University has left a note on bikes asking for your opinion as to where alternative parking could be made, and what your requirement are. Note that as this is the holiday period there are very few bikes about.

There does not seem to be a given reason as to why there is any need to move the bikes, and I am meeting with the authorities to discuss this. From a canvas recently many bikers I know you are in favour of keeping this space for bike parking.

Please send me any feedback to take to this meeting. The more support and replies the better. Possibly this could lead to some form of petition. But for now please send me directly by e-mail your comments / requests:
    simon27@xtra.co.nz

Thanks (mods - I need a real e-mail sheet to print rather than a PM so I hope this is OK).

Would you be that person that rides the white GSX that's always been parked outside WF? I work at the Business building and heard the talk of no more bikes allowed to park outside due to health and safety issues. Well I hope they allow bikes to continue parking there as it seem to be a great spot and have not heard bikes been pinched from there yet

Yes, that mine (as you can see in my profile). Nice bike you've got. e-mail me your comments and I'll put our opinions accross. (I've had that bike over a year, but had a different one before that)

Yep, remember you. Nice bike, good chat. Just e-mail as above. Keep in touch.

Anyone else interested in this can you also provide a list of the things that we need for adequate parking. I have had a few e-mails giving detail on the type of requirements we have and the issues we face that car drivers do not when parking (ie. the amount of bikes knocked over on St Paul st or vandalised; stolen outside the library etc).

I am perplexed as to why this thread is not in the "Auckland SMC" area.

    Beware!

Beware. They have an adgenda. That is why they are asking you when there are no bikes around. They will change shit, and then say, well, they asked everyone, right!

Would this be a meeting with UoA as well as AUT? I would be keen to attend on behalf of the SMC

The Universities Travel Plan consultation should include both, and is sepperate to this particular question of parking within AUT. The SMC should give their opinions on this issue and the wider issue in general.
Do send me your thoughts on this asap, and with regard to the bigger picture we should also meet to discuss this soon. PM me to set up a meeting.

Which is why you need to give me your view on the issue in a constructive way that I can use to ensure that our stakeholder needs are met.
What facilities do you need? Do you support parking at the current locations? Etc.

Tell them that they need to be doing the research at peek times when the most parking is needed which is not in the summer holidays.

Yes, we all know that, but they are not. So if you have any feedback lets get some in. So far I have distilled from the replies I have had and the personal conversation with riders here that the following broadly covers our needs:

    FAST parking
F - flat - a good space not just waste ground. Covered.
A - available - enough capacity for peak times - currently there is far too little
S - secure - safe, visible areas not hidden away
T - timely - near major destinations, ideally directly outside, not allocated miles away

More ideas and support is needed

    OK update time.
Quite a lot has happened over the last few weeks which I am not able to outline here. But the news is looking quite positive at this juncture.

Currently the University has asked me to highlight around AUT good potential bike parking areas for bikes. Areas around high-use destinations as well as any other potential areas.

If you know of any good possibilities, post them here with a clear description of the location, and why it would make a good parking area.

Please do not post any other comments, however witty, about your cynical views of the process at this point. This thread is being monitered by senior AUT staff and it will not help us improve our facilities. And at this stage it is looking as though the University is making a large committment on our behalf, so sensible contributions only.

Thanks for all the PMs before. These were written up into a full report for the VCs office and has been read by the very top people in the organisation. Your comments were anonymous, of course.

Thanks for that report bro, I mean apart from St Pauls St and the business building, I am not so sure where else there's going to enough space.

I sometimes park up by Student Job Search office, just outside the gym and somtimes just underneath the stairs/skywalk by Benette's Bookshop, next to that nice yellow bicycle stand/rack.

It's good that they're doing something about it and I am especially pleased that they've put in these new bicycle racks.

Also, I hardly find myself parking on the motorcycle parks on St Pauls St or on any street as it doesn't take much for some idiot to do something stupid. It's also a habit of mine of never parking the bike in open spaces where it's exposed to rain, as I hate getting my bike wet.

And finally, if you don't mind, why don't you post up the suggestion made by the other users so I can get a feel of things.

    PM if you must.
