Hi can anyone tell me what an original 1977 XLCR Cafe Racer would be worth now. I see some of the Triumph Hurricanes have been selling for 30K. Also any idea of how many came here. Cheers

one on fleabay last week for £3995 in the uk
did not get a single bid, but it had wrong exhaust system
I don't think that any would have come to NZ. I'm not even sure if there was an NZ importer for HDs then.
Cool looking bike, but I'm not too sure if you'd class it as a collector's item.
Winding up drongos, foil hat wearers and over sensitive KBers for over 14,000 posts...........![]()
" Life is not a rehearsal, it's as happy or miserable as you want to make it"
But now they go for stupid money - or did.. before the credit squeeze...
Now, like all 'collectables' its value is what the market will be prepared to pay. EBay would be a great place to research. Me - I wouldn't pay over the odds for one because they were not really a great riders bike and never will be. They are a HD oddity and of value only to HD collectors to trot out to impress your mates with. You could buy 10 old triumphs or standard sporties - modify them and run rings around one.
However - if you are thinking of buying one - be very very very careful because like all special editions and gold stars etc their basis is in the standard models and there are probably more in exisitence now than the factory ever made!
If you are selling make SURE you have all doccumentation, titles, photos etc to back up it is what it appears to be!
I love the onamatapoeia of the XLXR - excelsior.
Harleys were sold in NZ in XLCR days, but not common and I doubt if any came in.But I know a guy with one ,or maybe two.He has an XR1000 too,but doubt if they will ever go again, although he always says ''some day....''
The XR1000 would of been the perfect base for the XLCR,but they used the Sportster instead and made the XR1000 almost a cruiser.
There were 2 XLCRs in Dunedin a few years ago. More than a few years actually. More like 23 years ago. I had the pleasure (?) of riding one. It was fun but harsh. More noise than go. What would they be worth now? hmmm whatever someone wanted to pay for one. If its a real one it would sell for upwards of $20k USA. Even more collectable would be the XR750 flattracker. 2 of those burned to a crisp in the Harley shop fire in Dunedin in the late 80s.
The only HD I ever lusted after...
Rubbish the XLCR exhaust system actually worked and gave another 5 or so horsepower so the XLCR's actually went quite a bit better than the standard sporties
As for comparing to triumphs, you could compare it to a trident but the twins would be left so far behind trhey would not even be in the same race
My XLCR pissed over standard sporties
Have heard of about 6 or so other XLCR's in NZ
I shipped my one with me when I move to the UK
It took forever to sell the personalised plate XLCR or turd me so they are definitely thin on the ground
Thanks for comments , Interesting reading , I think there maybe a few Jap boys commenting
Any chance of talking to him he would know more about them I would have thought, thanks Robert
Depends on what you want to do with it - what I said was.. If you want a bike to ride - buy a std one or and old triumph and modify it. There are a thousand ways to modify a sporty or a triumph sot that it would go waaay better than and XLCR which I freely admit I have never ridden. HOWEVER my experience with a std XLCH would tell me if you want a good handler - but a dog triumph 67 to 72 and build a cafe racer - if it needs to be a HD - you can build a nicer bike from a cheap iron sporty for less than the cost of the real deal. If you want the real deal as a collectable or an investment buy it but it has to be the real deal and you better not modify it much.
Just my opinion of course
Everybody is entitled to their opinion, most people base them on their own personal experiences.
My experience of the modified triumph thing was about 20 years ago, it was still slower than a standard iron head sporty and yes in true triumph fashion it exploded in a quite spectactular fashion ventilating the crankcases with pieces of alloy conrods
Real deal as a collectable, it is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it
Modify an XLCR, well yes I am and I have, S&S carb, twin plug heads and billet caliper brakes, originality for originality sake is a waste of time, why repeat mistakes the factory made when better technology is easily and readily available
Don't worry, I have all the original parts and can return the bike to original and even have a spare set of heads if it is desired to remove the twin plugging
