    feck feck feck.
I had the bloody money to buy it sitting waiting.
I've wanted one of those since the day they came out -they are just THE perfect sports tourer
Far out! That's theft! Those things are worth nearly $30,000 new. And they can really boogie.

Yeah, well, not really, and that's kinda the problem, isn't it? As Hitcher correctly points out, this is a bike that goes for around $30K new. If Frosty has just missed out on an almost-new MV Agusta Brutale for $10K, would you be making that comment?

And this is a bike traditionally owned by crusty old men who aren't likely to flick it, so good second-hand examples are hard to come by.

Frosty sure picked the wrong one to fall in love with...

What can people tell us about the bike auction?
    Are they every fortnight?
What type of bikes from where? (ie. ex japan? or repo's?, or insurance fixer's?)
Where does one find out what coming up for auction?

Ask me that in a few weeks and I'll be able to tell ya.
The bike auctions traditionally are every second wendsday at 1.00pm but Turners had a reshuffle.
    I dunno whats happening.
It seems that the undamaged bikes go up at 1100 same day as the truck auction. -By undamaged I think they mean still registered or with off roaders still ridable.
I think the crash damaged bikes are up at 10 am the thursday after but don't count on it.
Just a word of warning -Unless you really know what you're looking at and you've done ya reserch I wouldn't go to the damaged auctions.
I look at a bike and Im looking for frame/fork wheel damage - then I add up the real cost to repair the bike -You need the numbers in your head -costs of parts n stuff.
Then ya gotta know what an average exhample of that bike looks like.

And then when you have the repair figure - double it.99% of these damaged bargins go waaaay over price for repair, there is always something extra that needs to done.

    They're bloody useless, are Turners.

When the insurance company wrote off my last VFR, it was mostly cosmetic damage, so I was keen to buy it and fix it up. But I had to get the reserve price from Turners, and that proved to be nearly impossible. They also said they didn't have the keys for it, which they did all along.

I dunno what my VFR went for in the end - Turners wouldn't tell me. How fecked up is that? If I'd been at the auction, I would've seen for myself, so it was hardly secret info, unless it didn't reach reserve and they negotiated with the highest bidder. Anyway, I caught up with the guy who bought it and fixed it up (he consequently sold it on TradeMe for less than State paid me), and he fixed it for waaaaay less than the $7800 Spectrum estimated for repairs. F'rinstance - they quoted $1100 for a fairing bracket (straightened = $0); $1200 for an OEM muffler to replace the dented one (s/steel sleeve was less than $200, aftermarket slip-on would've been my choice); plastics were deemed unrepairable by Reflections (having fixed it a couple of times before, Larry didn't want to do it again) but they were fixed and repainted for feck all; and there were a few other bits'n'bobs like indicators etc.
No frame, fork, wheel or other structural damage.

So if you are canny, and know what you're doing, you can do alright.
As long as your wife doesn't say, "You're not clutttering up MY garage with bike bits for months!!" Then you're screwed.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Dude - That sucks ... Sorry to hear about it,

BUT! Here's some bright news - I had the same experience (sort of) with my SRV - saw a real sweet one in Blue - saved for it and it got bought the night before I went round to the shop... Had all the deposit together and everything... Then they had another one in the shop that needed tidying...

If you are meant to own the bike, you will get the bike at some point ...
and things will come to you

    !

I was thinking of a private buyer,an insurance quote has to use new parts and quality repair processes, the customer will expect no less.Bikes are harder to get secondhand parts for than a car,and you have to figure in the time delay - you put in a quote based on parts available at Atomic, but 6 weeks later when your tender is accepted Atomic has sold those parts.I'm in that position at the moment with a Skyline insurance job,the parts I quoted are no longer there,I just keep ringing around hoping one has been wrapped around a pole lately. The bikes are up for auction because they are right offs, and they are right offs for a reason, you have to be very carefull on your assesment and not get emotionaly involved - wow,an R1 with just a scratched fairing and bent wheel,I could fix that for $100,then I'd have the R1 I've always wanted for half price!....keep the dreams, the reality is a nightmare.

I was quite keen on an FJR 1300 to but my budget did not suit so I've settled for an XJR 1300 and am quite satisfied.
When my TRX was written off it was supposed to be auctioned off by Turners but I never found out when - I would have liked to gone along and maybe put a bid in if the price was right

    Parts Search

So - Do you think it might be worth buying a damaged bike from an Auction to get hold of parts.... Cos one of the things that I find difficult for the SRV is getting nice parts.... I'd be happy to get hold of a second hand set of things, clean them up and polish them and then put them on my current bike... or is it just really a lottery?

Yes 'tis true. He was little bit peeved......

However Frosty you should think about the following points which may lessen your pique:

    1. It was a great big bike, and you're only a wittle wee fella
    2. It had been lying in the bush for 2 years and has probably got wetas living the pipes and the wiring loom has probably been chewed by kiore who have used the airbox as their toilet
    3. There was no key so the engine condition was unknown and was probably shagged having been dropped down a mountain side where it landed on its side with the engine running at full noise until it seized due to lack of oil...
    4. It has bad karma (you were pre-destined not to own it) and probably would have killed you if you got it
    5. You now have $10k to spend on something else....
    6. The guy who bought it was as keen as and I suspect was going to pay whatever it took to secure it anyway so it might have cost much more than $10k
    7. The panniers were missing and they will no doubt be worth shitloads, and last week there was a FJR1300 with factory panniers on bikepoint for $14k (it's gone now) so the $28k retail price for a new one doesn't necessarily translate a high second hand market price

It was unlucky but who knows how it might have turned out????

    Cheers
    Kerry
