    KTM 990 Adventure Screen

I get a lot of buffeting from the air coming over the top of my fairing. I was wondering if anyone on this site had cut their screen DOWN and if so what effect did it have on the buffeting?

A couple of times I have actually felt car sick and now in hindsight I think that was because of the wind hitting my helmet and maybe setting up some sort of vibration?

I am just on 6 ft tall.

Usually a problem with the more vertical screens.
I cut mine down until the wind was at my shoulders.

Before you take to it with a hacksaw (or an axe, knowing you) try removing it and making a dummy screen from coreboard (real estate signs stuff). This allows you to play with heights and find the optimum position for the screen without stuffing up the real screen.
Worth spending a bit of time on it, when I made the DR's screen, I spent an afternoon cutting bits off, adding them back on etc, interspersed with blasts down the motorway.
I ended up with a screen that works well for me, have fun!

Good ideas thank you. Strangely it doesn't seem to be a problem when I have my luggage on or a pillion (maybe that makes the back of the bike sit down more and change angles).

I might first take it off and see what it is like.

MY screen is fine solo but crap when 2-up.
The airflow with 2 people is totally different.

I also have wondered if it is my helmet, I might try a ride with my MX helmet and goggles and see what that is like. I know if I stand up slightly my head goes into the uninterupted air flow and that gets rid of the turbulence. AFC motorcycles also have a taller screen that I could try.

I took one for a test ride a while back ,twisties at slow /med speed fine got back on motorway and buffeting was really bad ,only problem you tend to spend more time at higway speed getting to the better roads, have seen a small screen mounted near top edge main screen to deflect air flow over rider on a DL650 at WMCC,s thats surposed to work .

Yes I cut mine down within days of buying my bike. Couldn't stand it as it was. Buffeting was unbearable.
Since then two of my mates have bought 990s and copied my screen. I'm 6'4" and I cut around 3" off mine. Works great and in my opinion looks better than std. I use either an Arai Tour X or RX7 Corsair. The tour x still flaps about in the breeze a bit as you would expect, but the RX7 is pretty good. Don't be scared to trim it down, there not that expensive if you bugger it!

    Cheers,

There are some very long threads on the adventure riders website (if I am allowed to mention that) about the 990 screen. Have a read on the orange crush section.

I am 6ft too but have not cut my screen. I wear a Shoei X1000 helmet which is pretty quiet anyway. A pair of good earplugs and I am good to go. I get a bit of noise but nothing that is too bad.

You have to be pretty certain if you are going to cut the screen as they do cost quite a lot to buy. Try modelling the screen with some old real estate agent advertising as Crisis Management suggested. I did this with just a small addition to the height of the screen and it was pretty good. Am now looking at getting the touratech clip on screen.

I have finally (sort of) solved it. I took the whole screen off and went for a ride, it was so quiet without the buffeting!!! It was great.

If I put my hand up out in front of me while riding, I could replicate the buffeting that the normal screen causes.

Now I need to work my way up from nothing to sort out how high it should be.
